Rosas Maschinenbau, a family-owned German manufacturer of specialized machines, proudly celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, marking a quarter-century of mechanical engineering and innovation in the label and packaging, printing, and converting industries.

To commemorate this, the company unveiled a new logo that symbolizes Rosas’ heritage and forward-looking vision. Designed with a minimalist and technical aesthetic, the logo features the company’s iconic gear element, a tribute to Rosas’ early beginnings in parts production and a symbol of simple collaboration, precision, and teamwork.

As part of its 25th-anniversary celebrations, Rosas introduced a limited-edition Viper 750 tabletop rewinder series, which was officially launched on its stand at Labelexpo Europe 2025 in Barcelona. Limited to just 25 units worldwide, the Viper 750 combines elegant black-and-gold styling with carbon-fibre accents.

Featuring a web speed of up to 750 m/min and a variable web tension range of 0.1 to 21 N, the Viper 750 is Rosas’ most powerful tabletop rewinder to date. Each unit is fully customizable, supporting advanced camera inspection systems, label dispensers, printing units, and RFID/NFC integration.

Not only does this year mark the 25th anniversary of the company, but it also marks the opening of a second facility in Dierdorf, Germany, close to the original site that was opened in 1980.

This site is where Rosas manufactures its high-tech rewinders and custom-made machines, while ensuring peak performance through a dedicated testing and showroom area.

Digital Link unveils AI-powered conversational product packaging

Digital Link has introduced an AI-powered product assistant that embeds conversational intelligence into a QR code, enabling packaging to communicate more than regulatory compliance and other static information. Packaging can now converse with users and answer their questions via a simple scan.

Digital Link co-founder and CEO Paula Rivero revealed the technology in a live demonstration at Labelexpo Europe 2025.

'For the first time, a product can respond when you ask it a question,' Rivero said. 'This is not a gimmick. This is packaging becoming a voice, an ambassador that speaks for the brand and listens to the consumer.'

Packaging has been a silent messenger for decades, limited to what could be printed on a label. The unveiling at The Pulse stage at Fira Gran Via Barcelona marks a shift from passive to interactive, from one-way to two-way.

In one demo, Rivero scanned a face cream pack and asked Cleo, the Digital Link assistant, if it was safe to use for a pregnant woman. Cleo replied with tailored suggestions and recommendations. In another, a gin bottle was asked about cocktails, resulting in a series of recipes and instructions.

The launch comes at a time when consumers demand instant clarity and regulators worldwide push for radical transparency. By merging GS1 Digital Link standards with conversational AI, Digital Link positions packaging at the intersection of compliance and innovation. It offers transparency, capable of providing consumers with trustworthy, real-time answers about ingredients, allergens, safety or sustainability. It enables agentification, driving products to become active digital agents, capable of dialogue and context-aware guidance. It also advances efficiency, enabling brands to lower support costs by automating Q&A while collecting valuable insight into consumer needs.

Rivero positioned Digital Link as the architect of a new consumer reality by reframing connected packaging from a regulatory burden into a strategic advantage.

'This is the barcode’s successor,' Rivero told the audience. 'From now on, products don’t just sit on shelves. They live, they listen, they respond.'

DuPont Cyrel Flexographic Solutions celebrated the 25th anniversary of its Fast Thermal Processing system. The Fast 1000 TD was installed at the heart of its Labelexpo Europe display and attracted huge crowds in Barcelona.

Jan Scharfenberg, business leader EMEA with DuPont Cyrel Flexographic Solutions, said: ‘This Labelexpo turned out to be extremely successful for us.

‘As we continue our 25 years of Fast celebrations, this year’s Labelexpo enabled us to not only showcase our latest equipment but to reconnect with many of our global customers, as well as close a number of deals.

‘Labelexpo served as a great meeting point for customers and partners, and this year was another success for our team. In addition to our booth, we displayed our plates and platemaking equipment at various partner booths, and our win a Fast 1000 TD competition, featuring a model kit of our flagship machine, attracted many visitors.’

Scharfenberg added that attendees also got the opportunity to see how quickly the Fast system can provide the first plate.

The continued success of the Fast thermal technology, with more than 1,500 installations worldwide, is a testament to the ongoing innovation and dedication that has ensured that the Cyrel Fast platemaking process has been continuously improved to meet changing demands since its launch at the turn of the millennium.

Scharfenberg said: ‘Importantly for today’s converters, it achieves all this while minimizing the environmental footprint of platemaking operations. With sustainability a core theme at Labelexpo, the event was the ideal platform on which to go into detail on the benefits of the DuPont™ Cyrel Fast system.’

A highlight of the Fast system was that it can reduce platemaking time by up to 75 per cent, which attendees were ‘amazed to learn’, said Scharfenberg. Additionally, other visitors commented on the dry, solvent-free process, meaning there is no need to touch any of the washout fluids.

‘VOC emissions by 99.8 per cent and the global warming potential is reduced by 48 per cent, minimizing environmental footprint,’ added Scharfenberg.

Recognizing the increased pressure of rising costs and the shortage of skilled labor facing some converters, Martin Automatic partnered with ETI Converting Equipment, LemuGroup and Lundberg Tech to present a fully connected production line that delivered a complete label product, from blank roll to finished, palletized labels across three exhibition stands and an aisle at the recent Labelexpo Europe event in Barcelona.

This was the European debut of this collaborative production line. Unlike typical trade show demos, this was a real commercial job for Mirmar, a Spanish label converter based in Valencia. The live run proved that four OEMs, from four different countries with four different languages, could deliver real-world performance under show conditions.

'This project demonstrates what’s possible when technology leaders think beyond individual machines and start thinking systemically,' said Gavin Rittmeyer, vice president of sales and marketing at Martin Automatic. 'By integrating our equipment and trusting each partner’s expertise, we’ve created a new investment model — one that simplifies automation planning for converters and reduces risk.'

The collaboration, which was built on close cooperation, transparency and shared commitment, ensured that the combined line ran seamlessly throughout the show, underscoring how strategic partnerships can unlock new efficiencies and value for converters seeking higher productivity and lower operating costs.

'Martin has always taken a holistic approach,' Rittmeyer added. 'While we’re best known for our unwind and rewind automation in the narrow- and wide-web printing sectors, our technology serves countless roll-fed applications from ultralight films to fiberglass roofing materials.'

With parent company Informa, the Labelexpo exhibition organizers announced a rebrand of the global series. The new name will be Loupe, best known as a printer’s eye glass but also in this case an acronym for Label and Outer Packaging Embellishment. The first expo under the new name will be the Americas show held in Chicago next September.

Rittmeyer said: 'I think it’s good that Informa recognizes the changing scope of the broader label market. We have seen this change for the past 15 years and often mused about when does the label become another form of packaging. All technology, from presses to inks and substrates, have made giant leaps over the past decades, and with consumers demanding more from their packaging, broadening the scope of the expo into flexible packaging and folding cartons is a logical move.'

Martin Automatic has long been showing how its portfolio of equipment is well-suited to all aspects of web-fed package print production, and this chimes well with the idea behind the rebranding to Loupe. Rittmeyer said: 'If it’s on a roll, we can unwind, splice and rewind virtually any substrate, so we look forward to seeing what new business the rebrand brings us.'

LemuGroup sees successful Labelexpo Europe 2025

LemuGroup participated in Labelexpo Europe 2025 in Barcelona, where the company presented innovations, including a complete conversion line.

The complete self-adhesive label conversion line was a fully automated system, beginning with Martin Automatic's MBS non-stop splicers, which fed ETl's Cohesio modular machine, efficiently transforming raw material into finished labels through a continuous process of coating, laminating and die-cutting in line. Lundberg Tech's MatrixCompactor collected and managed the matrix waste produced after the die-cutting process. The production process continued across the aisle at the LemuGroup stand, where it passed through the GTU rewinder for conversion of the web into finished rolls, followed by the UltraCompact robotic end-of-line boxing and palletizing system. A particularly striking feature was the structure designed jointly by the companies: a five-meter paper bridge suspended over the aisle connecting the two stands, allowing attendees to pass underneath. Beyond its visual appeal, this installation demonstrated the engineering capabilities and technical coordination between the companies involved.

This project, which debuted at Labelexpo America 2024, represented a strategic collaboration between Martin Automatic, ETI Converting, Lundberg Tech and LemuGroup. Its goal was to demonstrate the possibilities in configuring a complete converting line. Each company contributed its expertise, enabling the construction of a highly productive machine.

At its stand, LemuGroup also presented digital embellishment equipment, consisting of digital inkjet printing and stamping modules. The Mi 305 Digital Inkjet model can operate individually or be integrated into presses such as the MA 350. Its roller system for accumulating paper allows the machine to be stopped and started without losing labels, ensuring complete processing. Its interface facilitates instant job changes without the need for additional tooling.

The Mi 350 Digital Inkjet is designed to apply varnish in large volumes with maximum precision, without varnish waste and without any tooling screen or plates. In addition, its stamping module eliminates the need for primer or pre-varnishing, optimizing the process.

LemuGroup also presented the LI 220 RFID, its RFID insertion equipment, in combination with the Voyantic Tagsurance 3 module. This modular and compact technology offers real-time coding and quality control.

Additionally, LemuGroup received the Labels & Labeling Global Award in the Innovation category, in recognition of its end-of-line automation. This award validates the company's commitment to innovation and its effort to offer technologies that optimize customers' processes.

Mark Andy has showcased its largest-ever stand at Labelexpo Europe 2025 in Barcelona, running four live press demonstrations throughout each day as part of its complete pressroom display.

The concept of the Mark Andy stand was to demonstrate how a label converter can use the company as a single-source supplier for all production requirements from pre-press to finished product, and all processes in between, as well as supplying all essential consumables through its print products division, MAPP.

The four presses on working display were the Performance Series S9 and the Pro Series from Mark Andy's flexo portfolio, while the Digital Pro MAX and the Digital Series HighSpeed 1200 represented the company's digital/flexo hybrid capabilities.

Launched in 2024 and being shown at an expo in Europe for the first time, the S9 is a mid-web press based on sleeve technology that is designed for converters looking to diversify their capability beyond labels into flexible packaging and folding cartons. In Barcelona, the S9 was shown in 26-inch (660mm) web width with nine print stations running at 300m/min and converting printed rolls on a Rotoflex VLI-700 inspection/rewinder. The Pro Series is Mark Andy's fully functional servo-driven entry-level label press. It was shown in 17-inch (430mm) width and was fitted with eight colors, cold foil, delam/relam and a die-cutting unit.

The Digital Pro MAX is Mark Andy's flexo/toner-based hybrid. Its modular design allows for a variety of specifications for printing and converting in-line. It had a 13-inch (330mm) web width, was fitted with one flexo unit, CMYK digital toner engine, cold foil and semi-rotary die cutting.

The Digital Series HD HighSpeed 1200 line, also launched in 2024, and an evolution of the popular DSHD series that was developed entirely in-house by Mark Andy. This production system offers almost limitless variety in specification of printing and converting options, with the possibility of retrospectively upgrading as demand changes, making it as future-proof an investment as is possible. Capable of 480 ft/min (146 m/min), it offers the 1,200 DPI resolution required for top-end label production.

Also on the stand were an Arpeco tracker, an Anilox cleaner, a VPM 300 plate mounting table and a roll lift. ProWORX is Mark Andy's supporting software that streamlines digital label production. It showed automated step-and-repeat imposition with Label Suite, on-press color and RIP control via ProWORX DFE and real-time performance tracking through ProWORX Analytics. It offers a unified platform to boost efficiency, accuracy and uptime for converters running hybrid and digital workflows. The MAPP Print Products Division showed a full cabinet display of KM drums, toner, Tesa cleaning rolls, doctor blades, cleaning wipes, splicing and mounting tapes, digital ink and GEW UV bulbs.

In addition to the live machine demos, Mark Andy hosted two special events on the stand. 'Cocktails and Conversación' offered an opportunity for customers, the media and various industry luminaries and VIPs to enjoy drinks and canapes in an informal atmosphere as well as engage in one-to-ones with Mark Andy personnel on a variety of subjects. The second was hosting a delegation from ESD, the Turkish Label Manufacturers Association, who were given a private demo of each of the machines on show.

'It was my pleasure to welcome customers old, new and prospective to our stand in Barcelona, and I'm proud of how all the Mark Andy team worked together to make the expo so successful for the company,' commented Duane Pekar, CEO. 'The exhibition certainly attracted many high-level decision makers, and this has stimulated different conversations about what changes are needed from a leadership perspective. We view this exhibition as an excellent opportunity to build relationships and enjoyed keen interest in all our technology, but especially our Performance Series S9 flexo press and our high-speed DSHD flexo/inkjet hybrid line that were making their European show debut.'

Heidelberg and Gallus have reported strong demand across their System to Compose portfolio at Labelexpo 2025, with sales spanning new and existing products.

The company presented three major innovations at the show, including the Gallus Five hybrid press, which operates at speeds of up to 100 m/min. The Gallus Alpha provides an entry point for companies taking their first steps into digital printing or for those who have previously struggled to make the technology work commercially. The company also launched the Gallus Print Academy, an on-site training initiative that supports customers in their transition to smart, connected printing.

Labelexpo rebrands to Loupe

From 2026 Labelexpo Global Series will change its name to Loupe, with the first show under the new brand name, Loupe Americas 2026, taking place in Chicago next September.

The name change reflects the fact that printing technology developed for the labels industry - in-line flexo, digital and hybrid - is now disrupting the wider worlds of flexible packaging and folding cartons.

History

In its early years, Labelexpo was focused on narrow web converting of self-adhesive labels. Over the next two decades the show diversified into new technologies including shrink sleeves, wraparound and in-mold labels as well as new smart technologies such as RFID.

Over the last ten years, flexible packaging has become a growing part of Labelexpo.

This trend began with the launch of the HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press.

Flexo press manufacturers like Bobst, Omet, Lombardi, Nilpeter and Mark Andy then developed wider presses to handle flexible packaging. Suppliers of laminators started exhibiting; new suppliers like Synthogra came on board to offer short lead-time delivery of flexible packaging substrates. Karlville and Galaxy brought pouch-making machines to Labelexpo. Inks and coatings suppliers demonstrated their flexible packaging systems.

A survey of exhibitors at Labelexpo Europe 2025 showed that over 45 percent sold their products to both labels and flexible packaging converters. Registration data for Labelexpo Europe 2023 showed fully 40 percent of visitors registered an interest in flexible packaging as well as labels.

Flexpack to folding cartons

Now we see a similar trend happening with folding cartons. Registration data from Labelexpo Europe 2023 showed an astonishing 25 percent of show visitors registered an interest in folding cartons, long before folding cartons were promoted at the show.

What is driving this increasing interest in folding cartons at Labelexpo?

Firstly, folding carton printers are already visiting the show to look at label technology and to meet co-suppliers; second, label converters are looking at diversifying into folding cartons using the same inline, digital and hybrid technology they are already familiar with; and finally, the bigger consolidated package printing groups service all three sectors - labels, flexible packaging and folding cartons - and are already familiar with the core label converting technologies they find at Labelexpo.

At Labelexpo Europe 2025 Canon-Edale showed for the first time a flexo press producing finished, printed and decorated folding cartons in a single pass with inline turnbar, foiling, cast&cure holographic decoration and inline flatbed die cutting. It is this inline flexo technology, already familiar to label converters, that has the potential to disrupt the sheetfed offset folding carton industry, which is based on multi-stage production and extensive work-in-progress.

As with flexible packaging, it is a question of finding the correct applications where inline flexo, digital and hybrid technologies can establish a competitive advantage. This is generally in shorter run, highly decorated, smaller format work.

Edale was not alone in demonstrating folding carton technology at Labelexpo Europe 2025. Actega, for example, showed samples of barrier coated cartons replacing PE/board laminates and Konica Minolta showed digitally-printed carton samples.

Industry on board

With the diversification of Labelexpo into flexible packaging and now folding cartons, the show has naturally evolved into a wider package printing and converting exhibition, though with labels still very much at its core. This led the Labelexpo team to consider a new brand identity to reflect the growing presence of flexible packaging and folding carton converting technology at the show.

An outside consultancy was tasked with carrying out extensive research into how the label industry, and adjacent sectors, would react to a name change. The outcome was overwhelmingly positive.

After extensive debate, the name Loupe was chosen. Why Loupe?

The Loupe is a ubiquitous symbol of precision and quality throughout the labels and package printing industry. It is also a double acronym for Labels and OUter Pack Embellishment.

To be absolutely clear, the Loupe rebrand is not competing with general print shows like drupa, or with packaging shows like Fachpack or Pack Expo. It is about taking the core technology developed by the labels industry – inline flexo and rotary offset, digital and hybrid – into new market sectors where there are enormous opportunities for future development.

You will not see a CI, gravure or sheetfed offset press at Loupe. What you will see is the existing Loupe supplier base developing new technology for the efficient and profitable production of labels, short run flexible packaging, and both inline and digital folding cartons.
