UK converter Baker Labels has added to its senior management team for the first time in 10 years with the appointment of Phil Smith as general manager, BakPac.

L-R: Steve Baker and Phil Smith, new general manager at Baker Labels

Smith joins Mandy and Steve Baker, production manager Paul Sykes and commercial manager Jamie Doogan in the Brentwood, Essex-based trade label printer’s management team.

Smith brings nearly 30 years of label production experience to the role. He joined Sussex Labels in 1990, where he started in rewind/packing and moved up to production planning and estimating. In 1999 he joined Tinsley Robor Labels, taking on a number of management rolls from accounts, technical, commercial and operations manager before being appointed operations director of AGI Labels. Following the takeover by AJS Labels, he was appointed commercial director followed by managing director. When MPS absorbed AJS Labels, Smith was appointed general manager, a role he held until joining Baker Labels in June 2019.

Steve Baker, managing director of Baker Labels, said: ‘We have been growing rapidly over the last few years and the plan is to keep building, investing and growing, potentially into new areas of the print and packaging industry. We have some big plans ahead that created the need for another manager. I’ve known Phil for many years and always knew he’d be a good fit at Bakers. I’m looking forward to working with him, as are the rest of the team.’

Phil Smith said: ‘I am delighted to become part of the Bakers team who are highly skilled and passionate about the customer base. Their continued investment, growth and technical development is second to none. Baker Labels has a great reputation in the Label industry and this opportunity to spread that reputation into new areas is a very exciting prospect.’
