2015 Pro Carton ECMA Award finalists showcase potential of cartons

More than 100 entries were received for this year’s Pro Carton ECMA Award program, with the judges making special mention of the number showing cartonboard as ‘the most sustainable of packaging materials’.

Cadbury Heroes & Roses is a finalist in the Confectionery category of the 2015 Pro Carton ECMA Award program

Seven main categories are to be contested this year, Beauty & Cosmetics, Beverages, Confectionery, Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals, Food, Non-food and Volume Markets, as well as prizes for Carton of the Year, Most Innovative and Sustainability.

Numerous entries highlight how other materials could be replaced by cartonboard, while developments in structural design were described the judging panel as ‘especially striking’, and opening up new areas of use and market segments. Further, many of the entries promote interaction. Many successful examples demonstrated that good design need not necessarily be complicated, according to the judges.

Under the chairmanship of Satkar Gidda, of SiebertHead, the judging panel is made up of Lotte Krekels of Carrefour Belgium, Susanne Lippitsch of SL Design, Stan Akkermans of Mars and Wilfried Duivenvoorden  of Unilever. Peter Klein Sprokkelhorst acted as a consultant.

The jury was particularly impressed by the entries in the Beauty & Cosmetics and Food categories, and Gidda said: ‘If an outstanding concept is in harmony with the needs of production, distribution, the trade and, above all, the consumer, then we see really powerful solutions.’

The 2015 Award winners will be announced on September 10 as part of this year’s ECMA Congress in Bucharest, Hungary.

A roadshow featuring the winning cartons will then visit exhibitions, congresses and events across Europe, including Labelexpo Europe 2015 as part of the Packprint Workshop feature area
