Winners in the inaugural supplier recognition ceremony, held in Cleveland, Ohio, were selected based on their performance in areas such as sustainability, innovation, service, overall value and quality.

Sweden-based pulp and paper supplier Munksjö was recognized as Supplier of the Year for its ‘exceptional effort’ across all categories of performance.

‘This is an acknowledgement that its organization delivered to a very high standard in product and service quality as well as in innovation,’ said John Klein, global vice-president for procurement at Avery Dennison. ‘Its strategic perspective on Avery Dennison’s business and willingness to explore new avenues to deliver competitive advantage is a model for others to follow.’

Other winners included: Germany’s Bischof + Klein, which was named Best Emerging Supplier; BASF as Best Innovation Supplier; Dérivés Résiniques et Terpéniques of France, which was handed the Best Supplier Quality award; Michigan-based Holland as Best Transportation Supplier; and MSC Industrial Supply Co., of Melville, New York, as Best Indirect Supplier.

Taiwan’s Chung Hwa Pulp Corporation and America’s Boise won the Best Supplier Sustainability and Best Supplier Service Award respectively. The prize awarded to Chung Hwa Pulp Corporation is given to the supplier who ‘demonstrated both leadership and action’ to align with Avery Dennison’s sustainability policy to use responsibly sourced materials, comply with third party verification processes and show clear commitment to innovation and continuous improvement in this very important area. The Best Supplier Service Award as given to Boise goes to the supplier who in 2013 constantly met Avery Dennison on-time delivery targets and who found ways to reduce overall supplied lead times.

Klein added: ‘Our suppliers are a vital part of our value chain and these awards are our way of recognizing their work. It is important we have a strong working relationship so that together we continue delivering cutting-edge innovations and superior value to the pressure-sensitive industry.’

The awards ceremony was preceded by a one-day symposium where nearly 200 professionals from approximately 110 companies discussed the pressure-sensitive industry. Attending companies represented films, paper and chemical materials suppliers for the label, graphics and tapes businesses and those who provide indirect and freight services.

Don Nolan, president of Avery Dennison Materials Group, said: ‘The day’s events gave our suppliers a look at our view on close collaboration, how we use our guiding leadership principles in the marketplace and the vital importance of sustainability to our business and to the industry.’
