Bill Holywell passes away

Bill Holywell, one of the pioneers of the modern self-adhesive label industry in Australia, passed away in September at the age of 95. Having been an apprentice printer in the late 1930s, he commenced his own commercial printing company in 1950 and then went on to found Supa Stik Labels in 1969.

Bill Holywell founded Australia's Supa Stik Labels in 1969

Part of that real innovation and pioneering era in labeling in the 70’s when there was no internet, Bill developed his business in Western Australia by friendships through Finat, visiting exhibitions, and meeting international visitors and speakers attending LATMA events.

Although Bill had been retired for quite some years he never lost his interest in printing and many a time whilst retired he would ask his son Don (who took over the business on Bill's retirement) when he was bringing the latest Labels & Labeling magazine over to him. The third generation of the Holywell family, Peter Holywell, is now an active part of the Australian label industry. All three generations have been regular attendees of the Labelexpo shows.

Mike Fairley, international publishing director at Labels & Labeling, said: 'the 1960s were a true pioneering period and it is due to people like Bill that the industry has evolved to the sophisticated level it is today. From my first experiences of meeting Bill in the 1980s I have a had a long association with the Holywell family and have always looked forward to meeting and talking with them through the years, both at LATMA events in Australia and at Labelexpo shows in Europe. Even though Bill had been long retired he will be sadly missed by all his friends in the industry.'
