Green Bay Packaging’s Coated Products Division earned the 2011 Business Friend of Environment (BFOE) Award along with nine other companies at the 22nd annual Environmental Policy and Awards Conference on May 12 in Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA.

Green Bay Coated Products (GBCP) was awarded the BFOE Award, in the Pollution Prevention category, due to its work on diverting more than 50 percent of its waste from a landfill through recycling, reuse and waste-to-energy programs. With the efforts of a dedicated ‘Green Team’ and involvement of employees, GBCP defined the various waste streams that could be recycled, implemented processes for segregation, installed the necessary equipment, and identified outlets that could take the materials, diverting from landfills.

‘It reflects on all the positive contributions that the employees and the Green Team have completed,’ said Rick Henriksen, Lean coordinator and Green Team member at GBCP. ‘Not only are we benefiting financially, but we are doing the right thing environmentally.’

The BFOE Award highlights what Wisconsin companies are doing in the areas of pollution prevention, innovative technology and environmental stewardship. Winners are selected by an independent judging panel with representatives from industry, the Department of Natural Resources, and the University of Wisconsin-Extension. The event is sponsored by the Wisconsin Environmental Working Group (WEWG), an affiliate of Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce.
