Innovia presents films to support market growth

Innovia Films has used Labelexpo Americas 2016 to present a number of products designed to help the industry grow its presence in new and emerging markets, including in-mold labeling (IML) and digital printing.

Digital printing, food compliance and IML part of Innovia Film' Labelexpo Americas 2016 focus

Innovia Films has an extensive range of pre-optimized media to support the exciting, fast growing digital printing market, with its original developments being label films designed for the HP Indigo presses. This was then extended to include a range of technical packaging films as well to cover increased growth of digital printing in all applications. HP Indigo has detailed a high level of market adoption of its technology in both labels and packaging in 2016, as reported here.

For Innovia Films, the wider growth of the digital printing market, through dry toner and inkjet technologies and applications, has seen it grow its product portfolio with top coated label and packaging films that met the demands of each new ink and printing system. Its portfolio for digital label and package printing now includes Rayoface CDi and WDi for HP Indigo presses, and Propafilm XDi, ADi and ABDi, which are suitable for single ply or laminate packs.

A recent area of focus has been the development of a range of label films that meet the requirements of UV inkjet digital printing. Its PA range of coated films, which can be clear or white and one or two side coated, give excellent ink adhesion. The FA range offers EU and FDA food contact compliance for end users or brand owner demanding a food contact compliant film.

UltraFoil CFA (clear) and WFA (white) are other options from Innovia Films for food contact compliance, and comply with the applicable US and EU legislations for most applications involving direct contact with food across most food types. The compliance also covers a broad range of food use conditions such as ambient temperature filling and storage, chilled use, frozen conditions and warm fill.

‘The pressure sensitive label value chain is now very much under the spotlight, with retailers, brand owners and consumers expecting labels to meet the same regulations as traditional food packaging.  Until recently, top coated filmic labelstock materials did not have to meet global regulations for food contact compliance,’ said Alasdair McEwen, product manager for labels at Innovia Films. ‘Innovia Films is proud to say that its UltraFoil CFA and WFA top-coated label films are now food contact compliant.’

A further development has been two new films for IML, RayoForm ICDi and IWDi, that are pre-optimized for HP Indigo and Xeikon printing, and formulated with anti-static properties to allow them to run in IML applications.

Innovia Films actualy introduced its first IML films in 2009, offering balanced biaxial orientation and broadly equal mechanical properties in the machine and transverse directions. On show at Labelexpo Americas 2016 is RayoForm ICU, a crystal clear film that allows consumers to see the product inside, while providing the molder with 50 percent higher sheet feeding speeds.

Two other films joining the collection are RayoForm ICDi (clear) and IWDi (white). Both can be digitally printed and have been specifically developed to allow printers to meet the needs of short run jobs, new product launches and the demand from the market for packaging personalization.
