Mitsubishi launches papers for food packaging

Mitsubishi HiTec Paper is moving into a new business area with the launch of its Barricote range of barrier papers for food packaging.

The paper-based products are said to combine environmental sustainability with effective barrier protection against water, grease and mineral oil migration. Field tests on Barricote are currently being carried out with selected partners.

The development is part of the Bielefeld, Germany-based company’s plan for innovation and investment, which has also seen it increase activities in research and development and implement new working methods and production processes.

In 2014 and 2015 the technical production facilities and the energy processes at both mills were optimized. This investment has led to significantly increased productivity, production flexibility and efficiency across both sites.

‘In addition to this, we have carried out intensive best practice analyses, implemented new working methods and adjusted the organizational structure,’ said CEO Gerhard Schoon. ‘Detailed market studies and an intensification of R&D were the basis for product diversification and the definition of new product areas.’
