Narrow Web division launched at Sun Chemical UK

Sun Chemical UK is targeting the narrow web sector’s ink requirements with a new division, a new tailored product range and a new brand – Onyx.

Sun Chemical Narrow Web has been established as a separate division with operations at Liverpool, South Normanton and East Kilbride, offering a specialised service to printers operating presses up to 520mm reel width.

It’s estimated that there are 450 UK printers in this growing sector with an annual sales value of some 25m. Sun Chemical currently claims 14 per cent of this market and is aiming to double that share selling specially formulated inks for the narrow web label and flexible packaging markets.

The narrow web operation and its new Onyx brand will be officially launched at Labelexpo Brussels. Sun Chemical Narrow Web is being led by operations director, Jeff Hulston and business & marketing director, Tom Kelly. The range has been created round the brand name Onyx and at present comprising eight specialised product lines.

A key part of the preparation for the launch of Sun Chemical Narrow Web has been the recruitment of a dedicated team of six. ‘Sun Chemical has been a bit of a sleeping giant in narrow web,’ says Tom Kelly. ‘Now we have added to our resources, we have the technology and we have an exciting new brand, Onyx. We expect to make a major contribution to the narrow web industry.’
