Jet Technologies launches bio-plastic coffee packaging

This enables Australian coffee manufacturers to present coffee beans in packaging that is fully biodegradable, and strong enough to protect the quality of the product.

Jet Technologies has begun distributing the Goglio biodegradable laminate to coffee manufacturers from February 2018. It comes with a biodegradable barrier that increases packaging strength and protects the quality and freshness of the coffee inside it. The biodegradable laminate is fully recyclable and breaks down over time naturally. This specialty laminate is only compatible with certain form fill seal packing machinery.

Daniel Malki, general manager at Jet Technologies, explained: ‘While in the past many businesses prioritized how eye-catching their coffee packaging was to consumers and the cost. However, due to rising consumer knowledge, pressure to reduce waste and its impact on the environment, they are now having to consider environmental sustainability as a top priority.

‘In response, many packaging companies within the Australian market are assuring businesses that their coffee packaging options are environmentally friendly, eco-friendly, green or biodegradable. However, this is often not fully the case, or if it is, it means the packaging may not have the correct barrier properties to protect and maintain the quality of the coffee beans it carries.’

Malki concluded: ‘Until now, there have been no packaging companies in Australia offering coffee packaging that is truly biodegradable and has the ability to maintain packaging strength, integrity and freshness of the coffee product it contains. This is because to maintain product quality by withstanding the packing production process, logistics of handling and travel, coffee packaging needs a strong laminate lining.’
