Eco-friendly paper holograms on the rise

In an era where sustainability and security are paramount, discover which innovation is transforming the label printing industry.

Paper holograms made with eco-friendly materials are emerging as game-changers across the pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, food and beverage and automotive industries. These labels address environmental concerns while also providing a robust defense against counterfeit products for which holograms are best known.

Regulatory mandates, consumer preferences and corporate sustainability goals drive the rising demand for sustainable packaging and labeling. At the same time, counterfeiting continues to pose a significant threat to brand integrity and consumer safety.

The global hologram label market is experiencing robust growth. According to Allied Market Research, the hologram market size was valued at 5.3 billion USD in 2022 and is projected to reach 11.1 billion USD by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 9.3 percent during the forecast period. The increasing demand for secure packaging, driven by the rise in e-commerce and counterfeit goods, has fueled this market expansion.

Sustainability
Paper holograms can offer an alternative to alleviate environmental concerns. Unlike traditional holographic labels made with PET and other plastic substrates for their durability and optical clarity, paper holograms are crafted from biodegradable and recyclable materials, reducing their environmental footprint and aligning with the sustainability goals of many brands.

Several factors drive the growing popularity of biodegradable holograms.

Global regulatory frameworks increasingly favor sustainable packaging alternatives. In the European Union, the Single-Use Plastics Directive has accelerated the shift toward biodegradable materials.

Companies increasingly use sustainable packaging alternatives to enhance their brand image and appeal to environmentally conscious consumers.

Shobhit Gupta, joint managing director at Holostik, observes: ‘Brands began to realize that adopting paper holograms was not just about compliance but also a powerful way to connect with environmentally conscious consumers.’

“The convergence of sustainability and security is reshaping the future of labeling”

Holostik, an Indian company, transitioned to paper holograms instead of plastic, eliminating polyester from its process entirely. In addition to holograms, the company provides security inks and security printing, variable data from barcodes, QR codes, alphanumeric numbers and more.

Ankit Gupta, joint managing director at Holostik, explains: ‘The shift to paper holograms was a natural progression as the industry sought to balance performance with environmental responsibility. The challenge was ensuring that paper holograms could match their plastic counterparts’ optical brilliance and security features.’

3D AG is a company that produces compostable custom holographic labels with biodegradable cellulose film. The labels are made from plant-based cellulose material, which is 100 percent biodegradable and breaks down into natural components in composting facilities. The company’s biodegradable hologram label ‘Holo-Sprout’ can withstand various environments while breaking down in compost conditions (extreme heat, moisture and pressure).

Aleksandar Milutinovic, head of client solutions at 3D AG, states: ‘Eco-friendly and sustainable holograms align with current and upcoming regulations, making them a future-proof option for global markets. Sustainability is not just a buzzword but a responsibility we all share.’

Cold foil materials specialist K Laser Technology’s new sustainable substrate products, Viridian Eco-Paper and Eco-Paperboard, feature 150 holographic patterns and can be used to create a range of folding cartons, mailers, hang tags, postcards and labels.

‘The key lies in sustainability, with the products allowing foil designers, product designers and printers to have the best of both worlds: green packaging with stylish holographic effects,’ says Nicole Rivera, director of administration and marketing at K Laser Technology.

Pre-printed with a registered hologram, Viridian Eco-Paper and Eco-Paperboard enable users to create premium designs by overprinting the substrate with white ink using various screens of opacity to cover, reveal and colorize the holographic underlayer in a single pass.

Challenges ahead
While eco-friendly holograms represent a significant advancement, their adoption is not entirely smooth sailing. Some hurdles that need to be addressed include the cost of production, compatibility with existing packaging lines and consumer awareness.

The rise of eco-friendly holograms signifies a pivotal moment in the labeling industry.

As brands across sectors strive to meet sustainability goals and combat counterfeiting, the demand for innovative options like paper holograms is set to grow exponentially.

Rivera concludes: ‘The convergence of sustainability and security is reshaping the future of labeling. Eco-friendly and sustainable holograms are more than a trend; they’re a testament to the industry’s commitment to innovation and responsibility.’

Addressing gender gap in India’s label industry

Despite the technological growth of the Indian packaging and labeling industry continues to struggle with the underrepresentation of women.

Despite advancements in India’s label and flexible packaging sector, women remain underrepresented, especially in technical and operational roles. This gender gap limits diversity, innovation, and growth, particularly on the male-dominated shopfloor.

To address this challenge, Labelexpo India 2024 hosted a Women in Print luncheon, gathering women leaders from leading companies in the label industry.

Led by Jade Grace, managing director of Labelexpo Global Series, the discussion revolved around the low representation of women and strategies to encourage their participation and success in the fi eld.

Strategies shared

Sonal Sheth, director of Sheth Printograph, proposes a four-fold strategy to increase women’s participation in the industry.

‘Increasing awareness at the education level, where more young women are encouraged to take STEM as a subject, will create a pool of candidates to be absorbed in the corporate world,’ she says.

‘Management should change their mindset to include more women in their core functions of production, planning, design and R&D, rather than limiting them to marketing, finance and HR. Companies must also formulate conducive policies and incentive structures flexible for women.’

She adds that women should be offered equal representation in public forums and speaking opportunities, to showcase their intellect and capabilities.

Ashima Ahuja, director of Multitec, highlights the cultural barriers that discourage women from participating in shopfloor roles. ‘Multitec is a traditional engineering company with a state-of-the-art machine shop and an expansive R&D division. We actively participate in job fairs at engineering colleges to recruit top talent, yet it’s disappointing to see so few women opting for shopfloor experience. A successful R&D designer must work closely with the shop floor, but in India, this space remains predominantly male-dominated—a cultural barrier we need to address. Breaking this stereotype is vital to fostering diversity.’

The industry must focus on transforming mindsets at the grassroots level.

Encouraging diversity and inclusion in engineering from an early stage will build a more equitable and innovative industry.

Bhavprita Harshawardhan, director of digital solutions at Avery Dennison in South Asia, adds: ‘The industry must create visibility about its opportunities and equitable workplaces for women. Role model women leaders should become more visible and share their positive experiences in the industry. And companies should consciously create policies and workplaces more suitable for women.’

Priyanka Singla, director of segment development and sustainability, label and graphic materials, South Asia, Avery Dennison India, stressed that the industry needs women leadership more than ever.

‘When any industry faces peculiar urgency around innovation, new ideas, inclusion, high profitability and upliftment across the value chain, it always benefits significantly when women assume leadership roles.’

She also notes that manufacturing setups are upgrading to bring in the latest technology and want young talent to join.

To attract young talent, they also need to see empathetic leaders making decisions at these organizations.

Singla highlights companies such as Avery Dennison for setting an example.

‘Several myths around our industry need to be busted, especially about difficult working conditions or male-dominated teams. This onus is on the industry forerunners such as Avery Dennison, which has specific mandates to have 25 percent above manager-plus women employees and has put in place a rigorous mechanism to train in-house talent to take senior roles.’

Shagun Walia, head of marketing communication at Avery Dennison for South Asia and Southeast Asia, echoes the strides women have made at the company.

‘Though historically underrepresented in manufacturing, women are now leading change in labels and print, driving innovation and progress. At Avery Dennison, we take immense pride in cultivating an environment where talent thrives, irrespective of gender. Women here are leading critical initiatives across strategy, operations, and innovation, proving that this industry holds vast opportunities for those with passion and vision.’

Achieving gender equality in India’s label and packaging industry requires shifting mindsets, creating opportunities, and breaking stereotypes. Inclusive workplaces and strong female leadership will unlock the next generation’s potential.

JPFL Films expands flexible packaging production in India

JPFL Films, a subsidiary of flexible packaging giant Jindal Poly Films, has confirmed a capacity expansion with new BOPP, PET and CPP lines in Nashik, Maharashtra. The new lines, expected to be commissioned in the next 2-3 years’ time, will see a capex commitment of above INR 700 Crore (approximately 82m USD).

The new BOPP line to have a capacity of up to 42,000 tons per annum (Line 10), new PET line to have a capacity of up to 55,000 tons per annum (Line I) and the new CPP line to have a capacity of up to 18,000 tons per annum (Line 3).

This capacity expansion is in addition to its ongoing new BOPP Line (Line 9) which was announced in the month of August, 2024 and is part of the company’s strategic play in the flexible packaging segment and in line with the company’s aim to increase market share amidst challenging demand-supply imbalances leading to ongoing pricing pressures in the sector. The expansion comes with the YoY growth of around 43 percent in net revenue from operations in 9 months’ period FY 24-25 and to maintain its market leadership despite business headwinds. Flexible packaging, or packaging in general, is regarded as one of the most lucrative industries due to its wide applicability in the food and beverage, personal care, and pharmaceutical industries.

These new lines will be the most advanced in the market, boasting superior width and output capabilities, along with exceptional reliability, equipment quality, and process efficiency, according to the company.

Vinod Kumar Gupta, chief executive officer, JPFL Films, said: ‘With this expansion, we are enhancing our ability to meet and exceed customer expectations with a diverse range of high-performance films with focus of majority of the products made on the line towards sustainability and creation of a greener future. India-based Print Panache has installed the country’s first Lombardi Smartline press. Vinsak, the distributor of Lombardi presses in the region, installed the press.

Serving over 1,200 customers across India, and over 30 years of experience Print Panache produces 1 million labels and half a million cartons per day, specializing in self-adhesive and pressure-sensitive labels and high-quality carton boxes across sectors such as food and beverages, personal care, pharmaceuticals and automotive.

Following the success of the Lombardi I2, this latest addition to Vinsak’s portfolio brings entry-level machine designed to meet the evolving needs of label converters.

The new Smartline press, on the heels of Lombardi Synchroline platform offers a robust solution for producing precision pressure sensitive paper and film labels, the press accommodates up to 450mm web width, with a printing width of 430mm.

The press features servo-driven components. The Smartline provides accurate web tension control, making it suitable for high-quality label production with minimal downtime.

It is equipped with servo-driven unwinder and infeed modules, eight UV flexo printing stations, die-cutting station, and outfeed/rewinding station.

The Smartline’s flexible configurations allow Print Panache to tailor production processes according to client specifications. Its rail-mounted system includes essential modules such as delam/relam, air-assisted turn bar, and cold foil units, which expand the range of label finishes available.

Smartline’s mechatronic system minimizes transmission parts such as gears and belts, resulting in lower maintenance costs and increased machine uptime.

‘This marks our third Lombardi installation with Vinsak, and with each new addition, our trust in their technology and support continues to grow,’ said partner Anuj Kumar Gupta.

Added partners Shaswat and Raghav Bansal: ‘The Lombardi Smartline press will play a crucial role in enhancing our production capabilities and maintaining the high standards of quality we are known for.’

Gayatri Labels invests in New Print Solutions finishing machine

Dive in to learn why the company chose a digital label-finishing machine when it planned to diversify into digital printing.

Gayatri Labels, based in Hyderabad, India, is among the prominent label manufacturers specializing in PVC and paper-based self-adhesive labels for applications such as water bottles, soft drinks, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Founded in 1993, its production relied on flexo printing and die-punching for finishing. However, when the company saw the increasing demand for short-run and fast-turnaround jobs, it decided to diversify into digital by investing in a Konica Minolta AccurioLabel 230.

However, soon, it realized that a digital press alone wasn’t enough to build a fully digital label production setup. To truly unlock the benefits of digital, the entire workflow must be digital. ‘That’s where our VD330 digital label finisher came in. With its die-less cutting, automated job changeover, and ease of use, Gayatri Labels can now offer same-day delivery on short-run label jobs—a value-added service that sets them apart,’ shares Akshat Pardiwala, CEO, New Print Solutions, a new sister concern of Nippon Color. ‘With the Indian market witnessing rapid growth in short-run label jobs—driven by e-commerce, startups, and specialized SKUs—VD330 empowers label converters to adapt with agility and profitability. Several converters have moved 70–80 percent of their finishing work to the VD330, freeing traditional die-punching systems for high-volume jobs.’

Driving efficiency without dies

The VD330 eliminates the traditional requirement for dies or punches. The machine can start cutting immediately as soon as the user uploads the cutting layout file, saving time and cost associated with die manufacturing and setup. This reduces lead time and supports on-demand production, enabling converters to fulfill urgent orders within hours. With the first label cut being sellable, waste is drastically reduced compared to conventional die-cutting methods.

The machine has four precision cutting heads, delivering cutting speeds of up to 9 meters per minute. It supports label widths up to 320 mm and lengths up to 2000 mm, making it versatile for various digital and narrow-web flexo jobs.

With its integrated CCD camera, the VD330 can read job numbers or QR codes, enabling automatic job changeovers and cutting shape updates without operator input. This intelligent automation minimizes downtime and maximizes throughput, especially for converters managing multiple SKUs.

‘Beyond cutting, the VD330 also performs lamination for added durability and visual appeal, waste matrix removal for cleaner roll outputs, slitting into smaller rolls to suit various delivery formats and optional roll-to-sheet conversion for flexible production needs,’ notes Pardiwala.

The machine debuted at Labelexpo India 2024 and was ordered by Morya Labels, Star Offset, Angel Priint Tech, and Winways Digitech Multiservices.

Pardiwala adds: ‘Most of our installations are currently paired with KM digital label presses, and a few forward-thinking flexo users are also experiencing the benefits of our compact and efficient digital finisher.’

A division of MBR Group, Ahmedabad, India-based MBR Flexibles has enhanced its printing and production of labels and flexible packaging with investment in two Mark Andy flexographic presses from Flexo Image Graphics (FIG), distributor and service provider of flexo presses and associated equipment in the Indian sub-continent.

The converter chose Mark Andy 2200 and Mark Andy Evolution Series E5 for label printing.

Sahil Chopra, director of MBR Flexibles, said: ‘Over the years, or say decades, we have carved out a reputation for ourselves in the industry as a provider of quality products printed and produced using best-in-class machines and equipment. In this, the Mark Andy machines meet our standards.’

Established in the 1960s, MBR Group has been in the business of dye-chemicals, textile auxiliaries, and bulk intermediates. Extension of MBR Flexibles as the group’s imperative division took place in 2010 for exclusive engagement in flexible packaging manufacturing and high-end label printing in two production units.

‘The two Mark Andy presses in our facility are ideal for handling all kinds of high-end labels of all standards which we produce for our highly quality-conscious clients from different sectors,’ mentioned Chopra.

He added: ‘In fact, our back-to-back installations of the Mark Andy 2200 and Mark Andy Evolution Series E5 have dawned a new phase for us to cater to a newer range of products such as shrink sleeves, in-mold labels (IML) and more. In a significant stride towards environmental responsibility, Holostik has installed a solar power plant with a capacity of approximately 500 kWp at its Greater Noida manufacturing facility.

This renewable energy initiative will provide more than 25 percent of the plant’s power needs, making a substantial contribution to the company’s sustainability goals.

This installation of solar panels reflects Holostik’s alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Atmanirbhar Bharat 2047 vision and India's renewable energy goals. As India aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, this initiative contributes to the national target by reducing reliance on conventional energy sources and promoting clean energy adoption.

The installation of solar panels is one of many sustainability-driven initiatives at Holostik. The company has also integrated eco-friendly materials into its product line. Its Paperogram technology provides secure and sustainable brand protection, reducing reliance on plastic-based security labels and contributing to a greener future.
