Fedrigoni signs biomethane agreement

Fedrigoni Group has entered one of Italy's first long-term biomethane supply agreements for the paper industry, covering approximately 40 percent of the gas requirements of its Italian manufacturing plants and reducing the cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of products at those sites by 30 to 50 percent, depending on product line.

The agreement, signed with Verdalia Bioenergy, CH1, Fri-El and Bio.Methane.Hub, supplies renewable biomethane delivered through the existing Italian national gas grid, certified with Guarantees of Origin and Proof of Sustainability under RED II/III sustainability criteria. The deal has already been applied to Fedrigoni's Varone plant in Trentino.

Fedrigoni describes itself as operating in a hard-to-abate manufacturing sector where electrification options are limited and process emissions unavoidable, making biomethane substitution one of the most practical levers available for reducing carbon intensity in paper production. The long-term nature of the agreement also reduces the group's exposure to geopolitical volatility and reliance on imported fossil fuels.

'Energy transition is only truly sustainable when it also strengthens competitiveness and resilience, for Fedrigoni and for the customers who rely on us,' said Stefano Zanoni, group head of energy transition at Fedrigoni.

The initiative forms part of Fedrigoni's Making Progress sustainability strategy and its ESG 2030 targets covering carbon reduction, circular product design and responsible sourcing.

INX Europe achieves EcoVadis Gold medal

INX UK has achieved EcoVadis Gold medal status, placing the ink manufacturer in the top 5 percent of companies assessed worldwide for sustainability performance and representing a significant improvement from its Silver rating in 2025.

The overall score rose from 69 to 80, with improvements across all four EcoVadis categories of environmental management, labor and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement. The environmental section saw the largest gain of 19 points, driven by more robust policies, enhanced data collection and the introduction of external assurance for greenhouse gas data. Sustainable procurement scores also improved with the introduction of a supplier engagement program that incorporated risk assessment and engagement measures.

INX UK is also developing a Carbon Literacy course externally accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project, with the first session scheduled for next month, covering UK site steering team members and HSE staff.

'For our customers, this provides independent reassurance that sustainability is embedded into how we operate and work across the value chain,' said Elizabeth Smith, ESG director at INX Europe. 'It supports confidence in our responsible and ethical business practices, reduced environmental impacts and our transparency to continually improve the supply chain.'

Siegwerk restores community pond in Rajasthan

Siegwerk India has undertaken the restoration of a historic community pond in Pur Village, Rajasthan, India, with an investment of approximately 73k USD. The move highlights the company's ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability through its CSR initiatives.

Spread across approximately 11 acres, the pond was once the social and cultural heart of the village. Over time, however, it deteriorated due to neglect and continuous waste dumping from nearby shops. Despite its degraded condition, the pond continued to collect rainwater during monsoons, making it a strong candidate for restoration and long-term conservation.

The project commenced on November 21, 2025 and is expected to be completed by September-October 2026, generating an estimated 1,200 man-days of employment during implementation.

The pond was selected for restoration because it retained strong ecological recovery potential, offered ample space for future community development and enjoyed local support. The surrounding area provides opportunities for green spaces, walking tracks, seating areas, a gazebo, fitness facilities and extensive plantations. Equally important was the strong sense of ownership demonstrated by villagers, students and local leadership, creating a solid foundation for the project's long-term sustainability.

Siegwerk’s engagement with Pur Village began in 2025 with a CSR-led plantation initiative, under which residents voluntarily contributed 3,000sqm of land. As part of this initiative, 530 saplings were planted. The community has independently maintained the plantation site, reflecting strong environmental stewardship and a sense of ownership. This initiative formed the basis for deeper engagement and ultimately paved the way for the pond restoration project.

Building on this engagement, Siegwerk had previously also restored a community pond in Dhaki Village, further strengthening its focus on water conservation and ecosystem revival in rural regions.

The restoration initiative in Pur is being complemented by extensive plantation and landscape enhancement efforts around the site. To foster long-term ecological balance and expand local green cover, Siegwerk plans to plant 2,000 native saplings during the monsoon season. Early signs of ecological recovery have already emerged, with fish, frogs and turtles observed during dewatering activities, indicating the pond’s potential to support a thriving aquatic ecosystem.

To address the causes of degradation, Siegwerk's CSR team and implementation partners conducted awareness campaigns involving local shopkeepers, more than 300 school students and village residents. These efforts focused on preventing waste disposal into the pond and encouraging responsible environmental practices.

The project has also seen enthusiastic volunteer participation, with Siegwerk employees working alongside community members throughout the restoration process. To ensure the long-term sustainability of the initiative, a Pond Maintenance Committee has been established to oversee upkeep, community engagement, and stewardship of the restored water body.

'At Siegwerk, sustainability is deeply connected to the well-being of the communities around us. The restoration of the Pur Village pond demonstrates what can be achieved when environmental responsibility is combined with active community participation and a shared vision for the future. We have been particularly encouraged by the villagers' commitment, whose involvement has been instrumental in driving this project forward. Together, we are helping preserve a valuable community asset that will benefit generations to come,' said Ashish Pradhan, president, Siegwerk Asia.

Once completed, the restored pond will serve as a sustainable water resource, a biodiversity hub and a vibrant community space, benefiting current residents and future generations alike.

Chemco to manufacture food-grade rPET resin

India-based Chemco Group, a plastic packaging and manufacturing company, has received authorization from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to manufacture food-grade rPET resin for food-contact applications under the Food Safety & Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018.

The authorization is another step in the company's transition toward a more circular and compliant packaging ecosystem.

The approval follows Chemco’s recent commissioning of its large-scale bottle-to-bottle recycling facility in Sanand, Gujarat, representing an investment of approximately 1.25bn USD. The facility was established to recycle more than 1 billion post-consumer PET bottles annually, converting them into food-grade rPET resin suitable for use in food and beverage packaging applications.

The facility is supported by a Starlinger bottle-to-bottle recycling system, incorporating globally-recognized recycling technology designed for food-contact applications.

The facility meets India’s food-contact regulatory requirements under the Food Safety & Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018 and applicable Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) requirements governing rPET materials. It is also FSSC 22000-certified and recognized by the US FDA and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for food-contact rPET applications.

FSSAI authorization for food-contact applications represents a significant regulatory milestone for India’s recycled plastics sector, given the stringent standards governing recycled materials intended for direct contact with food and beverages. Under the Food Safety & Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018, manufacturers are required to demonstrate traceability, process control, testing and compliance measures to ensure the safety and suitability of materials for food-contact use.

Commenting on the development, Vaibhav Saraogi, director of Chemco Group, said: 'Receiving FSSAI authorization for food-grade rPET is an important milestone not only for Chemco, but also for the broader development of circular packaging infrastructure in India. As demand for compliant recycled content continues to increase, particularly in food and beverage packaging, it becomes essential to build credible domestic manufacturing capabilities supported by regulatory discipline, traceability and consistent quality standards. Our investment in bottle-to-bottle recycling was made with a long-term view of supporting both sustainability and supply-chain reliability for brand owners. This approval reinforces our ability to offer food-grade recycled material that meets stringent safety and compliance expectations while supporting India’s transition towards circular packaging.'

The approval comes at a particularly important time for India’s packaging industry as mandatory recycled-content obligations under the Plastic Waste Management (PWM) Rules continue to tighten. For Category I rigid plastic packaging, including PET bottles and containers, minimum recycled-content requirements have been prescribed at 40 percent for FY 2026–27, 50 percent for FY 2027–28 and 60 percent from FY 2028–29 onward.

These obligations are expected to significantly increase demand for domestically available, compliant food-grade recycled materials, particularly for beverage, food and FMCG packaging applications. Industry participants are increasingly seeking reliable local sources of food-grade rPET that support both regulatory compliance and long-term sustainability commitments.

The Sanand facility has been developed as a fully integrated bottle-to-bottle platform, strengthening Chemco’s ability to support brands with compliant recycled packaging through an end-to-end manufacturing approach. By combining food-grade rPET resin production with downstream packaging capabilities within the company, Chemco offers traceability, supply-chain reliability and quality consistency. This integrated model positions it among global packaging manufacturers capable of supporting large-scale recycled-content packaging requirements for leading consumer brands.

Beyond its environmental impact, the project contributes to the generation of skilled employment, strengthens Gujarat’s position as a manufacturing and sustainability hub and supports India’s broader objectives of resource efficiency, waste reduction and circular manufacturing.

A two-day flexographic printing symposium hosted by Follmann at its Technology and Knowledge Center in Minden, Germany, has demonstrated high-quality print results on transparent PCR-based PE film with more than 90 percent post-consumer recycled content, suggesting that demanding consumer packaging graphics on high-recycled content substrates may be more achievable than the industry has previously assumed.

The Next Generation Sustainable Flexo Symposium, held in May 2026 with live CI flexo production demonstrations at Allstein in Herford, brought together technology partners including Esko, Asahi Kasei Photoproducts, tesa, Petroplast, Polifilm, Parmarco, OCS Optical Control Systems and Follmann.

The demonstrations covered reverse and surface printing on transparent OPP films, MDO-PE and PCR-based PE materials and paper-based packaging substrates, integrating water-wash plate technology, water-based flexographic inks, precision anilox technology and automated plate-to-press processes.

PCR flexible packaging with high recycled content has traditionally been limited to simple applications such as courier envelopes and transport packaging, where visible haze and material inconsistencies constrained print quality. The symposium findings indicate that advances in plate technology, screening, press stability and workflow optimization across the full flexographic supply chain are beginning to change that picture.

The results are particularly relevant ahead of PPWR mandates expected to require a minimum of 30 percent recycled content in packaging from 2030, with targets rising thereafter. A key takeaway from the event was that progress depends on collaboration across the entire flexographic ecosystem rather than any single technology.

Avery Dennison has become the first company to achieve Old Corrugated Container equivalency certification and How2Recycle pre-qualification for thermal paper label products, confirming that the labels can be recycled alongside the corrugated boxes they are applied to without contaminating the fiber stream.

The DT300LD PLUS with AT2550 adhesive and the TT with S2550 adhesive have passed both parts of the OCC-E certification, created by the Fibre Box Association and the American Forest and Paper Association and awarded by Western Michigan University. The certification confirms the labels break down safely during recycling, avoiding the gummy deposits known as stickies that can clog recycling mill machinery and reduce the quality and yield of recovered fiber.

Both products also hold pre-qualification from the How2Recycle program for a widely recyclable label on a corrugated box. The certified constructions are compatible with existing thermal printing systems, allowing logistics, shipping, e-commerce and retail companies to adopt the labels without operational changes.

'By solving the challenge of ensuring that paper-based labels can be recycled alongside the materials they are attached to, we are helping our customers reach their goals for a sustainable future,' said Abby Monnot, vice president of marketing at Avery Dennison. 'These new products allow logistics companies to embrace circularity without compromising on performance.'

D.O.G. Label adopts Herma GreenGuide tool

D.O.G. Label, an Austrian label specialist based in Vienna, is using the Herma GreenGuide digital tool to support customer consultations on sustainable self-adhesive materials, finding it particularly effective in navigating the growing complexity of material choices and regulatory requirements ahead of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.

The GreenGuide uses three or four criteria, including packaging type, desired sustainability aspect and material, to generate actionable material recommendations. Anna-Carin Speneder-Magnet, head of business development at D.O.G. Label, discovered the tool at Fachpack 2025 and has since used it in direct customer consultations, most recently helping a customer identify a compostable self-adhesive material certified by DIN Certco for home and garden composting for direct application to fruit and vegetables.

'It's fascinating how easily and systematically it guides you to a sensible solution that can be implemented straight away,' said Speneder-Magnet. 'I can also use it to guide customers towards sustainable solutions in a targeted way, without overwhelming them.'

The tool is proving particularly useful in addressing knowledge gaps around PPWR implications. Speneder-Magnet highlights that extended producer responsibility fees from 2028 will factor in the material, recyclability and recycled content of the entire packaging, including labels, with a fee difference between good and poor recyclability of up to a factor of ten.

'If price-neutral solutions cannot always be achieved in full, it makes sense to offset impending EPR fees against slightly higher material costs. That really opens some customers' eyes,' she noted.

D.O.G. Label is part of D.O.G. GmbH, headquartered in Darmstadt, Germany, which specializes in pharmaceutical and cosmetics packaging. The Vienna plant generates 165,000 kWh per year through its own photovoltaic system, saving 55 tons of CO2 annually, and is targeting a silver EcoVadis rating.

Parkside renews partnership with Two Farmers

Parkside has renewed its successful partnership with crisp artisans Two Farmers to produce compostable crisp packets for Colicci, a premium coffee shop operator with over 40 sites across London.

The new project sees Parkside’s compostable material used to create packaging for three flavors of crisps produced by Two Farmers. The crisps – available in Lightly Salted, Cheese and Onion and Salt and Cider Vinegar flavors – are on sale at Colicci restaurants, cafes and kiosks. Once used, the empty packs can be disposed of in domestic waste streams where permitted by local authorities, and they will break down within 12 weeks in an industrial composting facility.

Ian McManus, sales account manager at Parkside, welcomed the launch, and said: 'The most successful and rewarding partnerships are always the ones where all parties share the same core business values. Two Farmers and Colicci are both leading by example when it comes to sustainability, and so are we, making this project a pleasure to work on.

'It’s a project that proves sustainability doesn’t have to mean compromising on pack performance or eye-catching aesthetics. In fact, proactively pursuing solutions that minimize your impact on the environment can enhance brand narratives.'

The launch marks the latest collaboration between Parkside and Two Farmers, with the two companies striking up a successful partnership to produce a number of sustainable crisp packets over recent years. The new packaging uses an advanced triplex configuration of Parkside’s compostable material, combining end-of-life benefits with strong barrier properties and a highly printable surface that enables vivid visual designs.

This material–made from renewable feedstock to reduce reliance on petrochemical plastics–is independently accredited as compostable under international standards, supporting Two Farmers’s broader sustainability goals. The crisp producer recently invested in a granulator, enabling it to break down compostable crisp packets into fragments. These are combined with production waste and fed into an on-site anaerobic digestion system to generate renewable energy.
