Constantia Flexibles and watttron collaborate on PP and aluminum lids

The initiative builds on Constantia Flexibles’ PPCover, a mono-material PP lidding technology designed to meet recyclability standards without compromising performance. While PPCover delivers clear environmental benefits, integrating it into existing sealing machines presented a technical challenge: ensuring consistent, high-quality seals across different lid materials without introducing inefficiencies or material deformation.

Traditional sealing systems typically heat the entire sealing head, which can lead to issues such as curling due to excess heat exposure. Although not widespread, this risk prompted Constantia Flexibles to explore more precise and adaptable sealing methods to ensure long-term reliability and compatibility.

The technology emerged through a partnership with watttron, whose ring-heating technology applies heat only to the outer sealing ring. This targeted method reduces thermal stress on the lid material and significantly improves energy efficiency. The system heats and cools rapidly — typically at a rate of 10 to 20 deg C per second — and maintains the set temperature with a high degree of accuracy (±1 deg C).

These features not only support consistent sealing performance but also allow the system to be safely powered down during production stops, contributing to energy savings of up to 50percent compared to conventional sealing methods.

Lab-scale tests using PPCover confirmed the effectiveness of the approach, demonstrating excellent peel behavior, strong internal pressure resistance, and reliable sealing for both PP and aluminum lids, all achieved using the same equipment.

Marcus Stein, CEO of watttron said: ‘We developed our ring-heating technology to deliver precise energy exactly where it’s needed — no more, no less. That precision not only improves quality and flexibility but also contributes meaningfully to energy efficiency in packaging lines.’

The universal sealing technology enables manufacturers to eliminate the need for separate machines or setups for different lid materials, simplifying production processes and reducing equipment complexity.

The system also integrates with 100percent inspection capabilities, enabling real-time detection and removal of defective cups to ensure consistent product quality.

Avery Dennison and Armor-Iimak have launched a collaborative technology combining the AD RDX MC paper-based label material with the new AWR XL thermal transfer ribbon at Labelexpo Europe in Barcelona.

The AWR XL ribbon, launched just a few days before Labelexpo Europe 2025, uses 26 percent less plastic than standard thermal transfer ribbons, is 100 percent solvent-free and, according to the manufacturer, saves up to 830g of CO2 per roll compared to standard products. Thanks to its ultrathin PET and innovative formulation, AWR XL is claimed to be the longest wax ribbon on the market. This extra length boosts operational efficiency by offering 40 percent additional printing time and optimizes the number of rolls, which reduces logistical costs.

The Avery Dennison RDX MC label material provides similar reductions. It is thinner and lighter than traditional labels, introducing 5 percent water and CO2 savings. Similarly, it offers more labels per roll, resulting in fewer changeovers and lower logistics costs. Less waste, more efficiency.

'AWR XL delivers a perfect print experience when it's combined with the Avery Dennison RDX MC paper-based product,' added Pierre-Arnaud Hommel, communications manager at Armor-Iimak. 'There are fewer roll changeovers, so our customers can gain precious printer running time, which is a direct improvement in productivity.'

HiFlow Solutions has launched AI-powered purchase order processing for packaging and label converters, automating PO intake, accelerating approvals and eliminating manual data entry.

The system extracts and verifies order details from emails, registers them into the ERP platform and initiates production workflows without manual intervention. HiFlow, a Microsoft AI Cloud Partner, uses machine learning, natural language processing, advanced vision recognition and analytics to power the technology.

The AI scans emails for new purchase orders, extracts key order data, validates it and automatically imports it into the ERP system. It fills in header and line item details, creates PO records, attaches documents and manages acknowledgment and approval communications. Once registered, the system routes orders to production scheduling, updates inventory and notifies relevant departments.

Early adopter Badger Paperboard has seen accelerated processing times while reducing errors and inconsistencies across its four locations through standardized workflows.

Graph-Tech USA has introduced the RFID-Runner, a UHF encode-and-print system designed to increase speed and efficiency in RFID label production.

The system can encode and print 10,000 RFID tags in under 12 minutes, reducing production time compared to conventional thermal transfer systems while supporting lower consumable usage and operational expenses.

The RFID-Runner features a triple-Impinj architecture where one encoder identifies the TID, a second encodes the data and a third performs quality and data checks to ensure data integrity. The system eliminates tag losses at roll starts and ends to minimize material waste.

The system can run either labels or cut tags on the same machine, with optional cameras available for visual inspection. Graph-Tech USA said the design enables higher output with fewer operators while maintaining quality.

'Our RFID-Runner is built to solve the bottlenecks that companies face with outdated RFID systems,' explained William Strater, VP of business development at Graph-Tech USA. 'It offers improved speed, reliability and cost efficiency, supporting companies in meeting evolving supply chain requirements.'

Graph-Tech USA provides data preparation software, multi-format compatibility and audit file generation for compliance and traceability. Optional integrations include print, laser and encryption features.

The company said the system addresses industry demands, including initiatives like Walmart's RFID mandate that require higher volumes at lower costs.

TIPA Compostable Packaging has launched four high-barrier film and laminate products designed to extend the use of compostable packaging across food and nutraceutical applications.

The laminates offer moisture and oxygen barrier properties for products including single-serve sachets, chips and salty snacks, protein and drink powders, vitamins and gummies, and ground coffee and tea.

'With more than 40 percent of consumer goods packaged in flexible packaging and less than one percent of these being recycled in the US, there is a need for more brands to choose sustainable options for their products,' noted Daphna Nissenbaum, CEO of TIPA.

The new high-barrier laminates feature both paper and transparent print layers, providing brands with options to meet both functional and aesthetic requirements. All films and laminates are designed to run on conventional packaging machinery and are printable and sealable.

TIPA stated that the compostable alternatives address plastic pollution from the design phase, thereby improving circularity for flexible and multi-layered packaging that cannot be recycled.

'Consumers enjoy the convenience of single-serve packets of everything from powdered drink mixes to their daily vitamins. Now that convenience does not have to create more waste,' Nissenbaum added.
