Beontag's PET Wash-Off adhesive is a pressure-sensitive technology specifically engineered for PET packaging using BOPP face stocks. VPF develops wine papers for water-based inkjet

German labelstock manufacturer VPF has launched proprietary inkjet wine papers exclusively available for water-based inkjet printing systems, which can be used with permanent or water-washable adhesives.

The company claims that, until now, no satisfactory technology has been available on the market for customizing label printing on high-quality embossed uncoated papers or wine papers using water-based inkjet printing systems.

Following the intensive development stage, VPF can now coat embossed papers with an inkjet coating that significantly improves colour brilliance and drying speed compared to uncoated papers.

The new product range includes the VPF 13885 (inkjet paper Martelé white 90g, 40 percent recycled content), the VPF 10600 (inkjet paper Vergé cream 80g), the VPF 13426 (inkjet paper Bagasse white 90g, 60 percent sugar cane fiber content) and the VPF 13825 (inkjet paper Laid White 90g, 100 percent recycled content).

These papers can be printed using dye and pigment inks while retaining the tactile qualities of uncoated paper. Despite the inkjet coating, the embossing on the paper is still clearly visible and can still be felt.

VPF said the new range opens up new possibilities for many manufacturers of high-quality products in decorating small and medium-sized runs, which are often characterized by numerous variety changes or individual imprints.

The company has paid particular attention to ensuring compatibility with permanent adhesives already used in the wine industry. It has also focused on coating with wash-off adhesives that enable labels to be cleanly separated from reusable products in washing lines (with or without lye).

All papers are now available with adhesives 951 (for permanent labels) and 605 Wash Off (washable at a minimum temperature of 70°C and with 1 percent lye). Specialized adhesives (opaque, hot melt, removable, cold-washable, etc.) are also available.

Following technical testing and at the customer's request, the VPF inkjet coating can also be applied to other specially embossed papers, creating unique and customised adhesive materials.

Wausau Coated Products, an independent, family-owned manufacturer of adhesive-based label products, has appointed Sarah Hilton as product manager for digital and converted products.

Hilton is a Macalester College graduate from St. Paul, Minnesota, who has built a career in marketing/communications and product management as a direct employee and on a consulting basis. Most recently, she led Empower Label's strategic rebranding and market launch, successfully introducing the new brand to the marketplace in March 2025.

‘I’ve worked at nonprofits and Fortune 500 companies, in start-up environments and on corporate teams. I’m grateful to be joining a family-owned company that’s truly focused on finding solutions for customers,’ said Hilton. ‘This is a really exciting period of growth and customer demand, and I believe that product management can be very impactful. The Ecologic line features thinner label materials and ribbons, which result in more labels per roll, fewer roll changes, lighter shipments and reduced transportation emissions. Using less material per label, the new product line helps lower overall waste and energy consumption, offering businesses a more sustainable labeling product from start to finish.

In addition, DLS has partnered with Trees for the Future to plant one tree for every Ecologic roll sold, further amplifying the product line’s positive environmental impact.

Toppan Group and Irplast officially mark closing of acquisition

The closing of the transaction between the Japanese group Toppan — through its Indian subsidiary Toppan Specialty Films — and Irplast was finalized at Irplast’s headquarters in Empoli.

Toppan is acquiring 80 percent of Irplast’s share capital. The remaining 20 percent will be retained by the current management, represented by CEO Fausto Cosi and COO Luca de Bartolo.

Toppan Group executives attended the ceremony: Satoshi Oya, president of Toppan; Manohara Kumar, CEO of Toppan Speciality Films; Masahiko Tatewaki, head of global packaging operations and president and CEO of Toppan Speciality Films USA; and Hiroshi Suzuki, deputy general manager of the living and industry division, with responsibility for R&D strategy and global operations.

Institutional representatives in attendance included Empoli mayor Alessio Mantellassi; member of Parliament Federico Gianassi; Senator Dario Parrini; Barbara Antonini, coordinator of the Empolese-Valdelsa territorial office; and Giuseppe Dentato from the CGIL trade union.

'This partnership represents a significant strategic milestone for both companies and marks the beginning of a new phase of growth for Irplast,' said Irplast’s CEO Fausto Cosi. 'The important synergies generated will allow us to strengthen our international development plan, while remaining firmly anchored to the values that have always guided us: quality, reliability and a strong focus on our customers’ needs.'

The acquisition is part of Toppan Group’s global expansion strategy, further strengthening its presence in the European market and broadening its range of products offered to international clients. Irplast produces specialty films, printed labels and adhesive tapes. The company has launched a major industrial development plan aimed at tripling its production capacity, supported by the installation of a new Brückner Maschinenbau – LISIM line. This investment will enable the production of 30,000 tons of specialty films designed for recyclable mono-material multilayer structures, in line with the new European directives (PPWR) and based on raw materials from renewable sources and chemical recycling.

Feldmuehle, a German supplier of papers for labels and packaging, has been affected this year by increased energy costs and procurement prices for raw materials.

Management implemented measures to increase operating profitability. Despite these efforts, the rising variable costs could not be offset by implemented price increases, partly due to the company's lower-than-expected revenues.

Management has decided to carry out necessary reorganization/restructuring of the company within the framework of insolvency proceedings under its own administration. On May 26, the company filed for an application with the competent local court in Pinneberg to open insolvency proceedings under its own administration pursuant to Sections 270, 270 b para. 1 InsO (German Insolvency Act).

Following the management's application, the Pinneberg Local Court ordered the provisional self-administration on May 27. Andreas Romey of Eckert Rechtsanwälte Steuerberater
Partnergesellschaft, Hamburg, was appointed as provisional administrator. The provisional administrator shall examine the economic situation and supervise the management. The company's management retains power of disposition.

Restructuring within the framework of self-administration gives the company's management the opportunity to undertake and respectively implement all necessary measures to improve profitability and thus to take measures toward the company's sustainable competitiveness.

All measures have been initiated to ensure that production can resume at Whitsun.

UPM Raflatac highlights sustainability work in Climate Review

UPM Raflatac has published its 2024 Climate Review, highlighting the progress it has made as a global partner for sustainable materials. The review showcases how UPM Raflatac and its partners are driving climate action in three focus areas: forests and land, emission reductions, and products and services.

Reducing the use of fossil fuels is the most important way to mitigate climate change, and this remains a core focus for UPM Raflatac. In 2024, UPM Raflatac achieved a 55 percent reduction in its Scope 1 and 2 emission intensity compared to a 2015 baseline year. Notably, three of the company’s factories, located in China, Malaysia and Finland, implemented renewable or CO2-free electricity contracts which cover the vast majority of their power usage. This development enabled significant progress towards a 65 percent reduction target by 2030. UPM Raflatac also continued its efforts to reduce its Scope 3 emission intensity related to raw materials and transportation. To reach a 30 percent reduction by 2030 compared to a 2018 baseline, the company aims to focus further on value chain collaboration and product development.

In 2024, 100 percent of UPM Raflatac’s purchased paper materials were certified under a credible third-party forest certification scheme. This 2030 target was reached six years in advance by the end of 2023, a major achievement that demonstrates the company’s sustainability leadership and ambition. Beyond certified papers, UPM Raflatac strives to achieve its 2030 goal of 100% traceability of other biobased materials, with progress in 2024 reaching 81 percent. As the demand for renewable products grows, so too does the need to ensure the sustainable origin of biobased raw materials.

To help customers make more sustainable material choices, UPM Raflatac launched several new products and services. These include the Carbon Action plastic films portfolio, designed to support the packaging value chain in reducing carbon footprint and enhancing recyclability.

UPM Raflatac also integrated product footprints directly into customer quotes. The footprints, generated by the externally validated LCA service, UPM Label Life, provide actionable data-driven insights to support purchasing decisions for customers.

In addition, the UPM RafCycle recycling service received a certificate of validity from Dekra for its CO2 impact assessments. This achievement offers customers increased assurance for their contributions to label waste recycling.

'Our decisive efforts have enabled strong and measurable progress on our 2030 climate commitments. Moving forward, we will increasingly concentrate on delivery towards our customers, investing in our LCA and Scope 3 services and in reducing the carbon footprint of our products. By collaborating with our partners and keeping our ambition to meet our climate goals, we can reduce impact at scale,' said Robert Taylor, director, global sustainability at UPM Raflatac.

Cosmo First commissions new BOPP line

Cosmo First has commissioned a new BOPP (Biaxially Oriented PolyPropylene) film line with capex of more than INR 400 crores (around 46m USD) at the company's existing manufacturing plant located at Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India.

The new line boasts an annual rated capacity of 81,200 MT with advanced technology. With the commissioning of the new line, the company’s annual BOPP capacity will increase by approx. 40 percent to 2,77,000 MT.

Speciality sales at Cosmo First have been growing at a CAGR of 10 percent for the last 6 years. The new BOPP Line will support Cosmo in further expanding its product portfolio across specialty films and packaging. The company plans to further strengthen its specialty films product portfolio with several new products in the pipeline, expected to be launched in the upcoming quarters.

Speaking on the development Pankaj Poddar, group CEO, Cosmo First, said: ‘We expect the line to get filled fast due to current favorable gap in demand and supply in the domestic industry. Further, the new BOPP film line shall be eligible for state govt incentives beside being the most cost-efficient line in India. The Company’s focus will be on taking full leverage of the new investments including BOPP line and grow specialty film sales.’
