Evonik has upgraded its UV-curable coating equipment at the Evonik Shanghai Innovation Park from a three-roll coater to a five-roll coating platform, improving its ability to simulate industrial production conditions for label and release liner applications.

The new system enables more precise formulation testing and process optimization by more closely reflecting customer production line configurations, and is designed to support smoother scale-up from laboratory development to commercial production. It is equipped with a UV and LED inert curing unit, allowing switching between UV and LED curing modes to support the industry's increasing adoption of LED curing technology, which offers lower energy consumption and reduced emissions compared to conventional systems.

'This investment reflects our commitment to customer-centric innovation,' said Jared Bender, head of product line agriculture and specialties at Evonik Interface and Polyurethane Additives. 'This advancement allows us to better support customer-specific projects, from early-stage feasibility studies to full production validation.'

Avery Dennison has received an award in the Advance Packaging Material Category at InnoPack Pharma Confex 2026, held on June 18–19, 2026, at the Sahara Star Hotel, Mumbai.

Bobst and Michelman target PPWR barriers

Bobst and Michelman have outlined the latest developments in their collaboration on recyclable high-barrier packaging, presenting mono-material polyethylene and paper-based structures designed to help converters meet EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation requirements ahead of the January 2030 deadline.

The two companies, which have worked together for over a decade on sustainable barrier packaging, presented updates on two flagship structures. OneBarrier PrimeCycle is a recyclable mono-material polyethylene structure combining MDO-PE film with ultra-thin Michelman primers and Bobst vacuum metallization technology. The unprinted structure contains up to 98 percent polyethylene content and achieved a recyclability score of 98 percent through external testing with cyclos-HTP, with oxygen and water transmission levels comparable to aluminum foil performance.

OneBarrier FibreCycle is a paper-based high-barrier structure using oxygen barrier primers, vacuum metallization and heat seal coatings applied in two wet coating phases. Final structures achieved oxygen transmission rates of 0.02-0.1 while maintaining moisture-barrier performance under tropical conditions, with recyclability demonstrated using CEPI-harmonized and Western Michigan University protocols.

The companies also presented proof-of-concept bio-based, plastic-free coating systems that target compliance with the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive, with structures running on industrial packaging equipment at speeds of up to 350 envelopes per minute, achieving 100 percent sealing performance. A further development using ultra-thin metalized BOPP film laminated to paper substrates was presented as an approach to aluminum foil replacement barrier levels.

'We needed to get the same barrier performance on much more challenging, less performing substrates,' said Nick Copeland, R&D director of barrier solutions at Bobst. 'That performance had to be achieved but also maintained through each conversion step.'

'By working together with different stakeholders in the value chain, we are able to accelerate innovation and reduce time to market,' added Thierry Van Migem, director of sales for the European region at Michelman.

Bobst and Michelman customers can test and develop structures at Bobst's global Competence Centers and Michelman's Global Technology Centers.

Lecta has completed a restructuring into independent companies aligned with its specialty papers, fine papers, distribution and self-adhesive materials businesses, accompanied by a group-wide recapitalization intended to strengthen the financial position of each entity.

The self-adhesive materials business will operate under the Adestor brand, alongside Torraspapel for specialty papers and Cartiere del Garda for fine papers. New websites for all three are due to launch on July 1, 2026.

Lecta said the recapitalization and restructuring provide each business with new opportunities for development and investment tailored to its specific market segment, aimed at improving responsiveness and long-term reliability for customers.

Cosmo Films has launched CSP DigiLux-MW, a new grade under its Cosmo Synthetic Paper vertical designed for high-end digital printing applications, offering enhanced whiteness and compatibility with a broad range of printing technologies.

The co-extruded, white opaque, polypropylene-based film is compatible with powder toner systems from Xerox, Konica Minolta, Kodak and Canon, as well as conventional and offset printing, water and UV-based flexo, screen, thermal transfer, letterpress, UV inkjet and HP Latex. The product meets EU 10/2011, USFDA, REACH and RoHS compliance standards.

The launch comes as the Indian synthetic paper market, valued at 53.42m USD in 2023, is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6.74 percent through 2029, driven by demand from e-commerce, FMCG and consumer goods packaging.

'The launch of CSP DigiLux-MW under our Cosmo Synthetic Paper vertical is a testament to our endeavor to seamlessly cater to the diverse needs of synthetic paper in the evolving commercial printing industry,' said Kulbhushan Malik, global business head at Cosmo Films.

ETI has joined forces with Henkel, an adhesive company, and Evonik, a silicone chemistry company, in its Technology Center program to support ETI’s long-term objective of enabling faster, more reliable innovation across the label industry.

These collaborations are established independently and do not constitute a partnership between Henkel and Evonik. Each company engages separately with ETI through the Technology Center program.

ETI’s Technology Center is designed to be a hands-on environment where converters, material suppliers and brand owners can evaluate materials, trial constructions and validate concepts with full technical support from ETI’s engineering and process specialists. By integrating the expertise of Henkel and Evonik, the center becomes a space where material expertise and production know-how come together in a real manufacturing environment.

'Our goal has always been to help the industry test ideas under the same conditions they’ll face on the production floor,' said Maxime Bayzelon, president of ETI Converting Equipment. 'By welcoming Henkel and Evonik into our Technology Center, we are reinforcing a collaborative environment where material expertise and manufacturing know-how come together in real production conditions. Customers gain direct access to specialists in adhesives and silicone release systems, allowing them to validate new constructions more efficiently and move projects forward with confidence.'

Located at ETI’s headquarters near Montreal, the Technology Center offers complete capabilities for silicone and adhesive coating, printing, lamination and die-cutting. Trials run on the same equipment found in full-scale manufacturing, so results translate directly to converters’ own production environments.

Each company brings its expertise in adhesion and silicone release to the Technology Center, making it an even richer hub for collaboration. The result is a stronger environment for exploring unique material combinations, assessing performance, and refining production approaches.

Austrian security and traceability specialist Securikett has launched a new high-performance label designed to help manufacturers comply with future Digital Product Passport (DPP) requirements.

Unveiled in June 2026, the label combines a durable adhesive and optional tamper-evident technology to ensure product identifiers remain securely attached and accessible throughout a product’s lifecycle, even on challenging surfaces such as wood.

The innovation also addresses one of the key challenges of future DPP ensuring that product identifiers remain permanently accessible.

The label features an exceptionally strong adhesive that withstands long-term use and demanding environmental conditions, ensuring that QR codes and product information remain available for years, supporting traceability, regulatory compliance, and product transparency.

For enhanced security, the label can be equipped with Securikett's VOID feature. Upon removal, the label leaves behind a permanent and irreversible tamper-evident message, making any attempt at interference immediately visible. This effectively prevents the label from being reapplied to another product and safeguards the integrity of the original item.

'The DPP requires that product data must remain accessible. This creates a significant technical challenge, particularly in ensuring that identifiers remain readable and linked to reliable data sources over time,' explained Vanessa Mitterer-Kling, head of R&D at Securikett. 'These new labels address this challenge by combining a highly durable adhesive with robust code integrity.'

The label is backed by Securikett's established traceability platform, Codikett 2.0, which ensures the continuous availability and secure management of digital product data in-line with DPP requirements.

Polyart Group has acquired Glatfelter Caerphilly from Magnera Corporation, with the Caerphilly, Wales-based facility renaming as Polyart Metallised UK from June 15, 2026, strengthening Polyart's position in the premium label market.

Glatfelter Caerphilly employs 44 people and manufactures metalized facestock papers for pressure-sensitive label applications, holding strong positions in facestock for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage and food packaging labels, wet-glue labels for beer bottles, and home and personal care markets. It is known for its lacquering and metalizing technology.

The acquisition gives Polyart access to advanced lacquering and metalizing capabilities and adds wet-glue label production to its portfolio, alongside increased production capacity from the Caerphilly facility.

'We are thrilled to welcome our Glatfelter Caerphilly colleagues to the group,' said Stéphane Daveau, CEO of Polyart Group. 'This acquisition strengthens our commitment to offering comprehensive, high-end labeling solutions while fostering sustainable growth for our customers and stakeholders.'

Polyart Group, formed in 2020 through the merger of Arjobex, MDV, Tech Folien and Reisewitz, employs 280 people across six production sites in France, Germany, the UK and the US, with sales of 83m EUR. It is owned by Prudentia Capital.

UPM Adhesive Materials has published its Climate Review 2025, reporting a 58 percent reduction in scope 1 and 2 emission intensity against its 2015 baseline, as it works toward a 65 percent reduction target by 2030.

The report outlines progress across operational emissions, supplier collaboration and customer-facing climate data. In 2025, the company expanded engagement with raw material suppliers on product carbon footprint questionnaires, with most key suppliers responding, increasing primary data coverage across materials and regions.

UPM Adhesive Materials has also met one of its 2030 targets ahead of schedule: by the end of 2023, 100 percent of its purchased paper raw materials will carry credible third-party forest certification.

The company's UPM Label Life service now provides externally validated life cycle assessment data and scope 3 reports for around 94 percent of its label products by sales volume globally, with product footprints integrated directly into customer quotes. Its UPM RafCycle liner waste recycling service continued to operate throughout 2025.

'Customers need impactful ways to reduce carbon footprint and respond to evolving recyclability and regulatory requirements,' said Robert Taylor, director of sustainability at UPM Adhesive Materials. 'The significant progress we have made in emission reductions, product footprint data availability and product portfolio development helps them make material choices that meet these needs.'
