Automation and sustainability key themes at Labelexpo Europe 2025

With the launch of the European Union’s circular economy program, including PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations), sustainability has moved to the top of the label and package printing industry’s list of priorities. And not only in Europe. Across the world, governments are starting to legislate on a wide range of sustainability issues like single-use plastics and recycling targets, while converters working for global brands anywhere in the world will need to meet their increasingly stringent sustainability mandates.

So this is the perfect time for Labelexpo Europe 2025 to announce a major focus on PPWR, which takes center stage at the label and package printing industry’s leading global showcase.

Speakers with expert knowledge of PPWR requirements, deadlines and trends will speak on the show floor as one of four days of expert talks, which will also include sessions on automation (closely linked to sustainability as we will see below), folding cartons, flexible packaging and smart labeling.

While many of the detailed requirements and timelines for PPWR remain unclear, the broad outlines are coming into focus. Labels are of critical importance to successful implementation of two PPWR requirements for ‘upcycling’ and multi-trip containers. The circular economy requires that packaging materials can be cleanly separated, and after processing, return to the same point in the value chain. This means, for example, that the label adhesive must remove cleanly from the container; it means UV ink needs to be separated from PET shrink sleeves so both container and sleeve material can be cleanly recovered.

The label also needs to provide information on the recyclability of each component of the container or pack. In the case of compostable materials, for example, consumers will need to determine if there are local industrial composting facilities available. Without that, the pack will not pass the circular economy upcycling test. The label will also provide the mechanism to activate post-consumer automatic materials sorting systems via machine-readable codes, as projected in the Holy Grail program.

Upcoming Digital Product Passport (DPP) legislation will mandate every physical product to have a ‘digital twin’ in the Cloud containing information on packaging materials, disposal advice, chain of custody and more. This will require the addition of an RFID inlay or QR codes, both of which require converters to invest in additional equipment and expertise. DPP is first rolling out through the apparel and electronics sectors, with additional rollouts to follow.

Turning to multi-trip refillable packaging, the requirement will again be for primary labels to wash off so the container can be cleaned before refilling and shipping back to retail stores or online customers. But since the EU requires that a container must make multiple round trips to count as ‘refillable’, there will also need to be a machine-readable permanent label with an adhesive strong enough to withstand washing, refilling and transit.

There are important sustainability issues that will be addressed in both flexible packaging and folding cartons at Labelexpo Europe 2025, reflecting the show’s move toward a wider package printing and converting event.

Laminations are a key issue. Expert speakers will examine current progress towards mono-materials, using barrier coatings as a substitute for laminate layers. What shelf-life and product protection characteristics are possible and where will we still require physical barriers? Coating technology that de-laminates pouch flexible packaging at the recycling stage will also be discussed.

Labelexpo Europe 2025 will also include a PPWR trail so the exhibitors demonstrating technologies can be easily found.

Automation supports sustainability

At first glance, automation has little to do with sustainability. In fact, the two are closely linked.

Firstly, automation directly supports label and packaging converters in complying with sustainability legislation and mandates.

Going forward, label and package print/converters will be expected to provide a wide range of sustainability metrics to brand customers and to state, federal and EU regulators.

Converters will need to automate the collection of carbon emissions data. Automated sensors on the most energy-intensive components of the press and converting equipment — servo motors and UV/drying lamps — are already a reality, along with the ability to send that information to Cloud servers and distribute securely over blockchain networks.

Brand owners will be asking converters for information on the composition of the packaging they supply. This will require that sustainability information is automatically collected across the supply chain, from suppliers of inks, plates, materials, pressroom chemicals, and so on. Without automation, this will simply not be possible.

Automation = Sustainable businesses

Automation is also central to making label and package printing businesses sustainable in the long run. Automation will be absolutely essential to address the shortage of skilled labor available to the print industry.

At Labelexpo Europe 2025, we expect to see major advances in machine automation. We already see a great deal of automation in the flexo process from makeready to automated monitoring of print pressure, tension, registration and color. A move towards Extended Color Gamut printing — keeping the same seven CMYK+OGV inks in the press to simulate Pantone colors — allows the automation of color management at the prepress stage.

On the rotary offset side, companies like Rotatek are now exploring AI modeling of ink-water balance to reduce setup times and waste levels.

On converting machines, we will see at Labelexpo Europe 2025 increased automation of a range of processes from knife setting to varnish plate engagement and camera-based QC through to turret rewinds. These machines will increasingly be set up and managed remotely, programmed via JDF/JMF, taking that responsibility away from machine operators. Format changes will be triggered by unique QR codes printed at the heads of new jobs either by a digital press or a digital print head added to a conventional press.

Digital embellishment using UV inkjet heads to jet coatings and adhesives allows a range of decorative processes to be automated, including cold foiling, tactile finishes and simulated embossing.

We will also see further developments in laser die cutting and in high-speed semi-rotary conventional die cutting with auto plate ejection. This has now reached the point where the only manual process is loading the flexible die.

Expect also to see at Labelexpo Europe 2025 increasing use of AI, particularly in the inspection and QC arena and in factory management.

Automation of the factory workflow helps businesses become more sustainable in many different ways.

Automation of inventory management, including reordering, has been with us for some time, but automation is now extending to workflow management powered by AI. This means, for example, automatic routing of jobs through the factory from prepress, through printing, converting and QC, with resources allocated according to a range of factors such as run length, converting and decoration requirements, machine and operator availability.

Robotics is another technology we will increasingly see at Labelexpo. For label converters, robots are targeted at automating the packing of finished rolls, typically taken from a turret rewinder. Going forward we are likely to see more of the operations around the press impacted by robotics, including the automated mounting of sleeves and tooling. Expect to see concept machine designs at Labelexpo Europe 2025.

The growing convergence of AI and automation will ultimately lead to more sustainable businesses for converters. It will dramatically reduce the need for operators with traditional print skills, making plants more efficient and creating more value-added jobs in managing automation, all of which will make label and package printing operations more profitable.

Labelexpo Europe 2025 will be dedicating a day of expert talks on the show floor addressing these opportunities.

Finat ELF 2025 explores critical topics

Finat has wrapped up its annual European Label Forum (ELF), reflecting the enduring spirit of collaboration and innovation that characterizes the Finat community. Held in Amsterdam from May 21–23, the event brought together a record number of 240 delegates from 26 countries and explored critical topics shaping the future of the label industry.

From environmental sustainability and the implications of the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) to the transformative role of artificial intelligence, innovation in flexible packaging, and strategies for future leadership, the high-caliber program featured thought leaders, market analysts, and technology experts.

A vibrant tabletop exhibition showcased 32 leading industry suppliers, including gold sponsors Avery Dennison, Beontag, Labelexpo/Labels & Labeling, Mark Andy and UPM Raflatac.

One of the highlights of the forum was the announcement of the winners of the 45th Finat Label Competition, which received 184 entries from 47 companies across 21 countries, once again underscoring the global relevance and reach of the Finat community.

'This year’s ELF truly embodied what Finat stands for: connecting people, sharing knowledge, and shaping the future of the label industry,' said Jules Lejeune, Finat managing director. 'We were delighted to return to Amsterdam 10 years after rebranding the ELF, and to see such an engaged, international crowd ready to discuss the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.'

Keynotes from geopolitical expert Ron Keller and mountaineer Bonita Norris inspired attendees with insights on global dynamics and personal resilience. In parallel, experts such as Corey Reardon (AWA), Thomas Reiner (Berndt & Partner), and Paul Jenkins (The PackHub) provided in-depth analyses of market trends, sustainability drivers, and technological transformation.

Notably, the forum also introduced the industry to new developments, such as Finat’s e-learning platform. It featured an animated scenario-planning tool powered by AI, sparking fresh dialogue about the future role of labels in a rapidly changing world.

'Three words sum up this year’s ELF: collaboration, action and persistence,' said Finat president Philippe Voet in his closing remarks. 'In a time of rapid change and consolidation, this event reminded us that progress happens when we come together, stay informed, and keep moving forward – one step at a time.'

The Finat European Label Forum 2026 will take place in Seville, Spain, from May 27–29.

Marzek Etiketten+Packaging receives Finat and WorldStar awards

Marzek Etiketten+Packaging has once again impressed the juries at the Finat International Label Awards and the WorldStar Award with attractive and sophisticated labels and has been presented with prestigious prizes and awards.

Finat, the international association of the label industry, honours the best label projects every year, thereby recognizing technically outstanding achievements in implementation and their role in marketing and advertising.

As in the previous year, Marzek Etiketten+Packaging again brought great prizes to Traiskirchen and achieved one victory and six Highly Commended awards.

The Braunrath Blaufränkisch project from the Martin Braunrath winery was honoured with the Judges' Award.

‘In this project, we succeeded in artfully working out the design using screen relief varnish and creating a sophisticated 3D effect with the help of an underlying grey screen,’ said Dr Johannes Michael Wareka, CEO of Marzek Etiketten+Packaging and fourth generation of the traditional family business.

The projects by Emotion Wine, Ing. Johann Frühwirth, Kaisergarten Tom Nier KG, Winzerhof Roland Kiss, Mad & Wine and Sammerhof Edelbrände Mag. Christian Brunner each received a Highly Commended award in the Marketing / End-Uses - Alcoholic Drinks category. Naturally, selected substrates were used for all projects, with surfaces that offer a visual and tactile experience. They also scored highly thanks to their high-quality design and exquisite finishes.

‘We are delighted that our work has been recognised by a renowned jury. It impressively shows that Marzek Etiketten+Packaging is in the top league and that our customers receive first-class services for the marketing of their products,’ commented Wareka.

Just a week after the Finat International Label Awards, Marzek Etiketten+Packaging received the WorldStar Award in the Alcoholic Beverages category for the real wood label for Horvath's egg and Swiss stone pine liqueurs.

‘Both awards are the result of the commitment of our highly qualified experts, who bring their expertise and creativity to every project to achieve outstanding results - supported by our innovative technologies.

Korozo Group, a global manufacturer of flexible packaging, has been recognized for its commitment to circularity and environmental responsibility. In recent weeks, it has received high-level recognition and awards.

The company has retained its EcoVadis silver medal and been included in the CDP ‘A’ List, reflecting continuous improvement across environmental, social, and governance areas.

EcoVadis is a global sustainability assessment platform that helps companies assess and improve their sustainability performance. Environmental impact, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement are all factored into the evaluation process.

With over 130,000 rated organizations across more than 180 countries, a silver medal places Korozo in the top 15 percent of assessed companies.

The Climate Disclosure Project (CDP) is the world’s only independent environmental disclosure system, collecting data from companies, cities, and regions to assess risks and opportunities related to climate change, forests, and water. Only the top 2 percent of companies achieve an ‘A’ score. Korozo’s inclusion reflects the accuracy and transparency of its environmental reporting and climate mitigation efforts.

Dr Betül Türel Erbay, chief innovation and sustainability officer at Korozo Group, attended the 15th CDP Climate Change & Nature Conference and Award Ceremony in May and accepted the award on behalf of the entire Korozo family.

‘With expectations increasing for total transparency regarding impact on the environment, earning a spot on the CDP Climate Change ‘A’ List recognises the accurate reporting we undertake and acknowledges the capabilities we have to reduce negative climate effects,’ commented Dr Erbay.

‘As we continue our journey towards best-in-class environmental stewardship and delivering sustainability, pack by pack, the EcoVadis Silver Medal and CDP A score exemplify the position we occupy in leading the flexible packaging industry into a sustainable and circular future.’

In addition, Korozo’s work to create fully recyclable and PPWR-ready packaging received acclaim at the recent 2025 PAGÇEV Plastic Recycling Awards. Specifically, packaging for laundry detergent capsules sold in Europe claimed a Silver trophy in the Plastic Packaging and Packaging Materials Category. These stand-up pouches are made using a proprietary MDO PE/PE laminated material and feature a minimum 30 percent of the total structure sourced from post-consumer recycled (PCR) content.

Can Ertekin, market manager for stand-up pouches, commented: ‘This award highlights the practical steps we are taking to enhance recyclability in the market and provide packaging solutions that are compatible with existing recycling infrastructure. These mono material designs are part of our response to the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which requires all packaging to be recyclable by 2030 and include 35 percent PCR content in plastic formats.’

This latest recognition follows 10 packaging innovation awards won by Korozo in 2024 and further success this year – including three awards presented at the recent WorldStar Global Packaging Awards 2025. Many of these award-winning packs feature Korozo’s in-house developed KoroRCY laminated structure. This proprietary material supports recyclability and reduces environmental impact without compromising performance.

Ertekin added: ‘Through material simplification and thoughtful design, we are replacing non-recyclable packaging while preserving functionality. Our goal is to support circularity through reduction, reuse, and improved recyclability, not just in concept, but in market-ready applications.’

Dr Erbay concluded: ‘Recognition at this level motivates us to continue improving. Sustainability is a continuous journey, and we’re proud to be working alongside our colleagues, customers, and partners to move the industry forward.’

Fedrigoni has revealed the results of Fedrigoni Top Award 2025, a competition designed to celebrate design excellence and highlight the creations of those who use Fedrigoni paper and self-adhesive materials to craft unique masterpieces.

The winners of this edition were announced on June 5 during a ceremony at the Pavillon Gabriel in Paris. Five categories: packaging, publishing, label, creative communication, and graphics applications. Additionally, students and young researchers participated by submitting projects in the Young Talents section.

Designers, printers, publishers, brands, and young creatives from around the world had their projects evaluated by an expert jury, including Simon Esterson (publication designer), Silvana Amato (graphic designer and professor), Paul Boudens (graphic designer), Marianne Givone (head of Global Content Factory at Diptyque), Gustavo Greco (founder and creative director of Brazilian independent design firm Greco), Kate Marlow (co-founder of Here, a collective of writers and designers), Melanie Mues (founder of Mues Design studio in London), and Sebastián Yañez (co-founder of YG Branding & Design Experts Agency, now renamed Thingular Creative Partners).

‘I want to congratulate the winners and all Top Award participants for their dedication in selecting, evaluating, and creating this incredible collection of projects. In the label category, ‘Sentinella’, from the Marche-based winery La Lepre e la Luna won for its label. The bottles feature a label with simple shapes and a touch of vibrant color, enhanced by the natural texture of 100 percent cotton paper.

Next was ‘Cline Family Cellars, The Sneak Wines’ by The Sneak (USA). Inspired by the rebellious character of winemaker Henry Cline, The Sneak is a wine that pays tribute to the courage to defy the status quo, a concept echoed in its refined and minimalist packaging design.

Third place went to ‘Sulcus – Extra Virgin Olive Oil’ by Sulcus, a project that perfectly expresses the features and qualities of the native land of this oil, Apulia: the red letters of the name Sulcus rest on a textured label that reflects the rocky landscape and the roughness of land cultivated for generation

Fedrigoni also recognized ‘Laberinto de Cidonia’, by UNESDI (Spain), a mysterious name that ideally takes us to the surface of the planet Mars, in the Cydonia region. The labyrinth occupies almost the entire label, distinguished by a high-relief finish and surrounded by six enigmatic symbols, ranging from a face to a pyramid.

Leibinger awarded sustainability medal from EcoVadis

EcoVadis CSR rating agency has awarded coding and marking systems specialist Leibinger a bronze medal. The company also completed the Sedex Group’s SMETA audit standard for the second time.

The EcoVadis bronze medal attests that Leibinger is among the top 35 percent of companies across all industries rated over the last twelve months.

Leibinger achieved the best results in the categories of environment, ethics, and labour and human rights. EcoVadis has evaluated over 130,000 companies around the globe based on four categories and 21 sustainability criteria based on international standards. It is governed by a panel of experts from the fields of industry and science.

As part of its sustainability efforts, Leibinger once again underwent verification in line with the SMETA audit standard of the non-profit Sedex Group in 2024. SMETA is the world’s leading audit and documents social responsibility in labour standards, health and safety, the environment and business ethics.

The EcoVadis award and the successful SMETA audit reaffirm Leibinger’s commitment to sustainability and passing on its ‘made in Germany’, resource-saving, durable and low-maintenance coding and marking products. The company's ongoing optimization of its product and service portfolio clearly reflects its strategic medium—and long-term focus.
