Vivid Laminating Technologies has confirmed it will launch its Matrix FoilLabel and Veloton systems at Labelexpo Barcelona 2025, making premium label embellishment more accessible for all label printers.

The new Matrix reel-to-reel digital foiling system introduces the ability to foil and laminate reel-to-reel and efficiently take up waste from label stock. The technology enables digital printers to add premium metallic finishes and special effects to label substrates without the high costs traditionally associated with foiling.

According to the company, the Veloton increases cutting speeds on positioned multiple cuts, making production up to ten times faster. The advancement extends digital cutting capabilities for both roll and cut sheet applications.

'With the launch of Matrix FoilLabel, we're opening the door for digital printers of all sizes to embrace label foiling,' stated Gavin Ward, technical director at Vivid. 'The system brings together the flexibility and quality the Matrix is known for, with reel-to-reel finishing that streamlines workflows, making label enhancement more affordable and accessible than ever before.'

The system features Matrix Metallic technology, ensuring that the majority of label stocks, including textured materials, are foilable. Setup takes less than five minutes, and changing over foil colors is fast and straightforward, ensuring minimal downtime and maximum productivity.

Live demonstrations of the Matrix FoilLabel at booth 3E15 will showcase how digital foiling can enhance labels with metallic effects and improve their shelf appeal. The Matrix FoilLabel will run in conjunction with the VeloBlade Volta during the exhibition.

Vivid will also showcase the VeloBlade Volta with Veloton and Velotaper, the ZipCore Packaging Suite, Matrix Metallic and Omniflow Feeder.

Bar Graphic Machinery demonstrates three finishing systems, headlined by the launch of a 22in finishing system featuring large capacity unwind with integral roll lifting, and CAP constant air pressure technology.

The new 22in system, the BGM Elite 550iSR, incorporates BGM's latest GPS gear positioning system, enabling operators to load master rolls into the braking system position with self-alignment requiring no operator intervention. The CAP system delivers constant air pressure to the unwind mandrel, while the large-capacity unwind includes integral roll lifting capabilities. The 550mm wide machine targets self-adhesive label finishing applications with one-metre diameter unwind and integral roll lifting. Standard features include constant air pressure to the unwind mandrel, automatic compensation braking and digital roll end capabilities. Options encompass dual rewind configurations, automatic inspection systems, razor units and venturi extraction. This machine is also available as a 26in (670mm) option.

The 450 Label-I 200 percent Automatic Inspection Slitter Rewinder inspects both sides of the web simultaneously while slitting and rewinding supported and unsupported substrates as thin as 15 microns. It operates at speeds reaching 300m/min and runs 12.7mm cores with a mandrel support attachment. It automatically inspects for print defects, die-to-print registration, missing matrix and labels. The machine automatically adjusts acceleration times to suit the mandrel size and includes a slowdown festoon with precise positioning on the editing table. Optional features include 2D and 3D inspection, PDF management, reporting and comparison, plus UV and RFID inspection capabilities. The machine operates at speeds of up to 300m/min.

The company demonstrates its 370eDSRT Easy Load Die Cut Slitter Semi-Automatic Turret Rewinder, achieving rotary die-cutting speeds reaching 250m/min. This machine features a two-spindle semi-automatic turret that splices material and advances tails onto cores. A tail layon system applies tails to the cores during operation. Dies receive support from a bottom guide rail system for effortless loading, improving setup time while reducing damage from incorrect loading. The dual-spindle design allows operators to pre-load cores on one spindle while the other rewinds. Users report productivity improvements of up to 60 percent.

Gietz has unveiled a premium spirit label design that will be demonstrated at Labelexpo Europe 2025, showcasing the capabilities of its ROFO 450 ECO hot foil stamping unit through a sophisticated multi-stroke embellishment process on matt black paper.

The 'Gietz Vodka' label, displayed at booth 4D26, features precise, delicate lining and deep embossing textures that create remarkable haptics and elegance without any pre-printing, according to the Swiss manufacturer.

The complex label design incorporates four distinct production strokes. The first two strokes apply transfer colors Luxor Alufin 302 and Luxor Alufin Matte 152 in precise horizontal and diagonal line patterns that meet at exact intersections.

The third stroke highlights the 'Gietz' lettering with prismatic relief using Lumafin Clear 799, while individual texture embossing is applied to the 'Vodka' letters using the same product.

A fourth stroke completes the design with blind embossing on the back label, featuring three distinctive textures available through interchangeable inserts from Hinderer + Mühlich. A polyester carrier protects the blind embossing during this final process.

The project utilized Avery Dennison Fasson Soft Touch Black FSC substrate, described as a high-quality, deep-black label paper with a velvety feel, ideal for sophisticated embellishments.

Gietz developed the demonstration label in collaboration with several partners. Leonhard Kurz provided expertise in product transfer selection, while Hinderer + Mühlich contributed knowledge of embossing tools. Avery Dennison supplied the elegant matt black substrate.

The company utilized Kurz's DreamComposer software to visualize and optimize the design in 3D before production, allowing for a careful selection of structures and color transfers.

Production testing took place at Gietz's headquarters, where technicians set up the ROFO 450 ECO in the assembly hall to evaluate applications and optimize production parameters.

The ROFO 450 ECO is positioned as a core model for narrow-web embellishment processes of printed and non-printed substrates, designed to handle pressure-sensitive materials, paper, cardboard, plastic film and composite substrates.

The showcase includes the GE363VJL, built on the Gemini platform and equipped with a coating unit, the company's Digital Embellishment Technology 'Jet D-Screen' and the Cartes Laser Converting System to finish labels without tools.

'These configurations represent our commitment to advancing label embellishment capabilities,' said the company.

The GT365WHSSR, based on the GT360 platform, features semi-rotary flexo, hot stamping, flatbed silk screen printing and semi-rotary die-cutting units. The GT367WSHSJRH combines seven units with special devices to embellish labels built by multiple layers, mixing conventional units with the JDS 'Jet D-Screen' technology for raised and metallic doming effects.

The Label Makers installs Martin Automatic technology

The Label Makers has added automation to its 10-color MPS EF-430 press with the installation of a Martin Automatic MBS 04-17-40 automatic unwind butt splicer at the front end of the press and a Martin LRD 05-18-31 automatic transfer rewind at the delivery end.

The company, founded 60 years ago in Bradford, West Yorkshire, today supplies labels to a wide range of industries, including food and beverage, personal care, petrochemicals and decorative coatings.

Managing director Zenna Parfaniuk said: 'It’s the attitude of mind that gets the best out of our technology. Our people all buy into problem-solving as a way of working, so phrases like "it can’t be done" and "it will do" have no place here because we thrive on perfection — it’s what makes a job both challenging and rewarding.'

Combining work ethic with the most appropriate technology for its customer base and specific demands is the top priority for The Label Makers.

One requirement for high-quality embellishment is good web tension and accurate register, and, according to operations manager Jamie Hyde, this is the reason for the company's latest tranche of flexo presses from Dutch firm MPS.

The Label Makers decided to equip one of its MPS presses with automation to improve its performance on both short- and long-run work, particularly in roll handling at both ends of the line.

Parfaniuk said: 'We knew we could reduce waste on partially used rolls and make significant cost savings. And that’s in addition to the benefits of continuous running and reduced operator fatigue.'

The Label Makers chose the Martin Automatic machines for their design principle and robust construction, which provides reliability. Hyde added: 'Martin has a great reputation for keeping things simple and making them work. The functions being performed do not need sophisticated electronics, which add to the price and often reduce reliability.'

The installation in the Bradford factory was not straightforward, with both floorspace and height restrictions, but Martin Automatic tailored the design of its units specifically to match the footprint available on the production floor.

Martin Automatic sales manager Chris Chappel said: 'Floorspace and ceiling height were initial concerns, but these challenges are nothing new to us. Our portfolio of space-saving designs, including the MBS compact 90-degree turn bar model and reduced-height festoon, allows us to meet customer requirements without compromising efficiency or reliability.'

The Martin MBS butt splicer and LRD transfer rewind are well-proven across a wide range of production lines, handling substrates from paper and film to laminate and board. Engineered for performance and durability, they accommodate web widths up to 660 mm, roll diameters up to 1250 mm and transfer speeds of up to 300 m/min. As the units were fitted onto an existing line at The Label Makers, the installation was carefully planned to ensure minimal disruption, allowing the new equipment to be integrated seamlessly while production continued smoothly.

'Because we all operate on tight margins these days, every incremental improvement in productivity yields financial rewards, and if it also improves quality, that’s an added bonus when you are specializing in embellished finishing at the top end of the market,' said Parfaniuk.

Currently, The Label Makers runs both paper and filmic substrates on its presses. A typical job might be 50,000m run on 4,000m rolls. This is where the Martin MBS helps by offering non-stop production even on the longest runs, which Hyde estimates saves at least 80m of material per roll change, in addition to helping with issues of time lost and variable print quality associated with stopping and then ramping up to full production speed. The machine also facilitates short-run work, which is now in high demand.

Hyde also believes that future investments will include the addition of Martin Automatic technology to the two other MPS presses, as well as automated waste extraction to maximize efficiency. 'Martin machines are renowned for longevity. I know of instances where the same unit has been fitted to successive generations of presses, so while the ROI is short, the long-term investment return is excellent too,' he said.

Parfaniuk said: 'We are our own harshest critics here, but it pays dividends with both customers and staff alike, and there’s nothing we enjoy more than showing end users how we’ve solved a problem for them. It’s motivational for our staff and ensures we get the very best out of the technology we invest in.'

Chappel added: 'Martin Automatic is delighted to be a part of The Label Makers’ success story, and we look forward to extending our close working partnership going forward.
