Siegwerk showcases latest ink and coating developments at Labelexpo Europe

Siegwerk has confirmed to highlight some of its latest ink and coating developments for labels and packaging printing at booth 3G77 at Labelexpo Europe 2025. The company will also provide insights into how its products can enhance efficiency and recyclability, thereby helping to meet the latest packaging trends.

'The show highlights will include our latest low-migration ink series for labels, shrink sleeves, aluminum lids or foils, and plastic tube printing, as well as our industry-leading inkjet inks for sensitive applications and direct-to-object printing. We will also introduce new overprint varnishes specially developed for the finishing and embellishment of digitally printed labels,' said Guido Lander, vice president, narrow web EMEA at Siegwerk.

Visitors can look forward to gaining insights into the company’s diverse portfolio of printing inks and coatings and learn how these can help them to produce sustainable labels and packaging efficiently. 'At Siegwerk, we stand for tailor-made options that combine ecological responsibility with maximum performance, and that is exactly what we will be demonstrating once again at this year's Labelexpo,' added Lander.

With its newest generations of Sicura Nutriflex 10, a UV flexo ink series, and Sicura Nutriflex LEDTec, a dual-cure system that can be cured with either LED or UV mercury lamps, Siegwerk will introduce two series that now also enable the printing of primary food packaging in accordance with the German Ink Ordinance (GIO), which comes into effect on January 1, 2026. The new regulation aims to improve consumer health protection and is more comprehensive and restrictive than existing regulations. With Sicura Flex Dual Cure, Siegwerk will also showcase a dual-cure system suitable for non-food applications as well as food packaging, where processing conditions preclude the possibility of set-off and the final printed packaging ensures reliable functional barrier properties against migration.

'With our latest developments of dual-cure inks for food and non-food applications, we are making it even easier for our customers not only to switch to more eco-friendly production processes without compromising on performance, but also to meet the requirements of the upcoming regulations like GIO already,' explained Marc Larvor, head of technology, narrow web, EMEA at Siegwerk.

The company has been developing UV and LED UV-curing products for decades and offers a broad portfolio of inks and coatings that are continuously optimized to meet changing market requirements, such as new raw materials and the increasing performance of LED UV lamps. With energy savings of up to 50 percent, LED UV is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative for printers, not least due to the recent high and volatile energy costs.

Siegwerk will also showcase other highlights from its UV-curable inkjet ink portfolio, developed exclusively for Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) partners. The company's products are engineered to provide maximum performance and reliability through deep technical co-development, ensuring simple integration with an OEM's printing equipment.

All UV inkjet products are 100 percent free of compounds that are carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction (CMR-free), addressing the highest regulatory standards. The entire portfolio is optimized for modern, energy-efficient LED curing systems. For standout print quality, these inks provide an extended color gamut further supported by custom-developed spot colors to meet specific brand requirements.

The company's featured portfolio includes Sicura Jet, a high-performance, CMR-free UV-curable inkjet series delivering excellent adhesion and high durability for labels, aluminum blisters, and direct-to-object printing. Sicura NutriJet is an industry-leading low-migration ink series designed to meet the highest safety standards for food, pharmaceutical, and hygiene packaging applications.

Hubergroup Print Solutions has introduced a nitrocellulose (NC) calculation service to support printers in determining the NC content in their packaging. Each hubergroup service technician is now equipped with an NC calculator, enabling an accurate assessment of the NC content in packaging constructions and checking their compliance with thresholds. Combined with the company’s solvent-based Gecko portfolio, this innovative service enables printers and designers to plan recycling-friendly packaging concepts with confidence and foresight. The service addresses the challenges posed by evolving regulations and helps the industry transition towards a circular future.

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) mandates that all packaging must be recyclable by 2030, with non-recyclable materials set to be banned. Moreover, current Design for Recycling (D4R) definitions, e.g., from RecyClass, Ceflex and the German Mindeststandard, impose stringent limits on the allowable NC content in flexible packaging– ranging from de facto bans to threshold limits between 0.8 percent and 1.3 percent by weight. This leaves converters and printers in a difficult position, needing to deliver packaging that meets performance demands while staying ahead of evolving compliance requirements.

Hubergroup’s service concept supports customers in calculating the NC content in a printed packaging construction, taking into account the specific design and Hubergroup’s ink formulations. Unlike traditional, static estimations or time-consuming manual analysis, Hubergroup’s service team uses a sophisticated NC calculator that delivers reliable results within a few minutes–and is always on hand. This reduces the risk of non-compliance and helps plan recycling-friendly packaging concepts.

Dr Lars Hancke, manager, business development, flexible packaging at Hubergroup Deutschland, stated: 'With our self-developed NC calculator, customers quickly receive reliable results on the NC content of their packaging prints, allowing them to make informed decisions. This new service, therefore, enhances and streamlines their product development process.'

The NC calculator is explicitly tailored to Hubergroup’s Gecko portfolio, a versatile and performance-driven ink and varnish system for flexible packaging. For NC-based printing within the thresholds, Hubergroup recommends combining NC-free Whites with NC-based colors to strike the perfect balance between performance and recyclability.

Enno Lingemann, technical product manager, Gecko at Hubergroup Deutschland, stated: 'With Gecko’s flexible structure and our dedicated support, we empower our customers to confidently meet regulatory challenges while achieving outstanding print quality, speed, and design versatility.'

Nevertheless, Hubergroup is convinced that there is no single product to support sustainable packaging. That’s why the Gecko system supports three complementary paths.

NC-based printing within the limits, featuring NC-free Whites and transparent management via the NC calculation service.
NC-based printing combined with a de-inking primer, enabling easy ink removal for enhanced recyclability. PU-based printing with the Gecko Platinum series, which is a chlorine- and NC-free ink that is fully recyclable and suited for demanding applications.

As per the company, whether using films, aluminium, or carton board, Gecko and the NC calculation service give printers the tools they need to meet today’s demands – and tomorrow’s obligations – with confidence, creativity and care.

INX International Ink will showcase traditional and low migration UV flexo inks, conventional and low migration screen inks, and UV and water-based inkjet inks and coatings at Booth 3C130 at Labelexpo Europe 2025, taking place September 16-19 in Barcelona, Spain.

INX will also unveil a new proprietary technology platform for packaging applications.

Labelexpo Europe has a new venue this year after moving from Belgium. It will be held at Barcelona’s Fira Gran Via, one of the largest exhibition centers in Europe.

It’s also available for use with floatable roll fed OPP labels, allowing a customer to print multiple types with one ink system.

In the digital space, the INXJet portfolio of premium digital inks includes a wide range of UV LED water-based inks and embellishment varnishes for label and flexible packaging applications. These high-performance inks produce vibrant graphics and premium finishes on high-speed presses, and are compatible with the most widely adopted inkjet printing technologies such as Epson, Kyocera and Dimatix Samba printheads.

Ink and chemicals specialist hubergroup has accelerated its sustainability journey with the appointment of Silke Siebeneiker as its first head of sustainability, publication of its inaugural sustainability report and achievement of a group-wide EcoVadis Bronze Medal.

The company appointed Siebeneiker to the role on April 1, 2025, reflecting its commitment to ESG principles within its corporate structure. Under her leadership, hubergroup aims to advance its holistic approach to sustainability, combining environmental, social and governance criteria.

'Sustainability is the foundation for shaping the future of our industry. We need to rethink processes, drive innovation and create meaningful value that benefits our customers, our people and the wider society,' commented Siebeneiker. 'By embracing a 360-degree approach, we ensure that sustainability is embedded at every level at hubergroup, from strategy and operations to culture and community.'

The appointment comes as new shareholder Mavnu, which acquired hubergroup in April 2025, actively promotes the company's sustainable commitment.

Siegwerk and Ravenwood partner to advance linerless labels

Siegwerk and Ravenwood Packaging have partnered to accelerate the adoption of sustainable linerless labels across the packaging industry. As part of this collaboration, Siegwerk has developed and submitted two BPA-free release varnishes now approved for use on Ravenwood’s linerless label systems.

These varnishes meet the stringent requirements of the Nestlé Guidance, as well as the Swiss and German Ink Ordinances, making them fully compliant for nutrition, pharma and hygiene (NPH) applications.

As mentioned before, the varnishes comply with the German Ink Ordinances (GIO), a harmonized set of regulations developed to ensure the safety and regulatory compliance of printing inks used in food packaging. The GIO framework facilitates international market access by aligning ink formulations with strict migration limits and toxicological standards, thereby supporting food safety and consumer protection.

'We are excited to collaborate with Ravenwood to bring high-performance, sustainable solutions to the market,' said Guido Lander, vice president, business unit narrow web, EMEA at Siegwerk. 'This partnership reflects our shared commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.'

The companies are working closely to align marketing efforts and explore further opportunities for joint innovation. 'We see this as a significant step forward in enabling circular packaging solutions,' said Dan Coe, director at Ravenwood. 'Siegwerk’s expertise in coatings perfectly complements Ravenwood’s linerless technology.'

Linerless labels are a good alternative to traditional pressure-sensitive labels. Unlike conventional labels, they do not require a silicone-coated release liner, which significantly reduces material waste and environmental impact. This technology offers benefits such as increased label yield per roll, reduced storage and transportation costs, and improved sustainability by minimizing landfill waste.

A joint appearance and announcement are planned for the upcoming Labelexpo, where both companies will showcase the benefits of their integrated product.
