Edale has appointed PT Samafitro as its distributor for Indonesia, extending the flexographic press manufacturer's reach in Southeast Asia through a partner offering sales, installation and service support.

PT Samafitro, a Jakarta-based industrial printing and finishing provider, will distribute Edale's LabelLine and CartonLine platforms to label and carton converters across Indonesia. The company already carries Canon technologies and brings deep experience in digital and packaging printing.

'We're thrilled to partner with Samafitro,' commented Ryan Barrett, head of sales APAC for Edale. 'Their strong presence and local service capabilities make them ideal distributors for Edale in Indonesia. Together, we'll be able to serve converters more effectively, bringing the technical support, flexibility and innovation Edale is known for directly to the Indonesian market.'

Tjhin Bui Phin, president director at PT Samafitro, added: 'We are excited to represent Edale's LabelLine and CartonLine presses in Indonesia. Their flexographic technology complements our commitment to delivering advanced, end-to-end printing systems. The distribution agreement follows Edale's recent showcase at Labelexpo Europe 2025, where it demonstrated its CartonLine FL6p press with live production of integrated carton applications.

Jaakkoo-Taara invests in HP Indigo 35K

Finnish printing company Jaakkoo-Taara has invested in an HP Indigo 35K digital press with a Tresu iCoat II in-line coating unit to strengthen its folding carton production capabilities for the pharmaceutical industry, with delivery and installation scheduled for March 2026.

The press will be used for pharmaceutical carton production, meeting demands for quality, consistency and regulatory compliance. The investment supports Jaakkoo-Taara's strategy of combining operational excellence with advanced digital print technology.

'This is a natural next step for us to widen our digital printing capabilities,' commented Thomas Brusila, managing director at Jaakkoo-Taara. 'The HP Indigo 35K gives us the quality, color stability and process control required for pharmaceutical production, while also offering the flexibility and efficiency we need to support our customers' evolving requirements.'

The HP Indigo 35K is designed for short and medium run lengths of folding carton and packaging production. With print quality, repeatability and support for a wide range of substrates, the press enables converters to deliver consistent results. Combined with the Tresu iCoat II in-line, Jaakkoo-Taara gains capabilities for in-line spot coating, supporting functional and aesthetic requirements of pharmaceutical applications.

The investment represents the start of a new partnership for Visutech, the Nordic supplier that sold the press.

Rotatek will showcase the Universal 850 printing press at an open house running from January 12 to 16 at its manufacturing facility in Barcelona, Spain, where attendees will experience the company's factory operations and interact with its production, management and research and development teams.

The Universal 850 is a versatile rotary press that combines offset and flexo sleeve technologies, delivering high-quality printing across pharma inserts, shrink sleeves, flexible packaging, folding cartons and in-mold labels (IML).

The live demonstration will feature the Rotatek Universal 850 configured with seven offset and two flexo printing stations, alongside the Rietstack 850 off-line die-cutting system for a fully integrated IML production workflow.

'Rotatek Universal web-offset printing combines the core advantages of flexo and sheet-fed offset while eliminating their limitations, delivering a superior quality, economical option for high-performance in-mold label production,' stated Rotatek.

The press features Rotatek's patented interchangeable light offset sleeve system, which enables fast format changes. Job changeovers are completed by simply removing and replacing sleeves, reducing downtime and eliminating the risk of material breakage during transitions.

The Universal 850 offers format flexibility up to 1016 mm repeat lengths and lower origination costs, with offset plates significantly more economical than flexo plates or rotogravure rollers.

'The major point in the resurgence of offset presses for flexible packaging is the elevated demand for low cost and short time span of origination with the help of offset plates,' said Ranesh Bajaj, managing director of Rotatek-Vinsak. 'The live videos at our manufacturing site will help visitors to get an overview of our commitment and potential for innovation. We are going to welcome 100 giant flexo converters to our open house event.'

The open house targets new IML producers and companies planning to enter the packaging segment, large sheet-fed offset printers looking to transition to web-fed efficiency, flexo converters seeking to reduce plate costs and achieve return on investment within three to four years, and packaging producers requiring long repeat lengths or focused on increasing capacity while reducing waste, labor and production costs.

Edale has announced a refreshed portfolio of flexographic label and folding carton presses aligned with parent company Canon's branding and design aesthetic.

The lineup comprises four models: LabelLine FL4e and LabelLine FL4p for labels, and CartonLine FL6p and CartonLine FL7p for folding cartons. The range is organized into two performance tiers: Essential (e) for daily production and commercial agility, and Precision (p) for premium applications, higher volumes and advanced automation.

'With LabelLine FL4e and FL4p, and CartonLine FL6p and FL7p, customers can quickly identify the press that fits their reality today; our Essential range for dependable day-to-day production, or Precision, for when they're scaling into premium applications, higher volumes and added automation,' stated Lachlan Buirds, managing director at Edale.

The LabelLine FL4e is a 430mm narrow-web label press designed for short to medium runs with fast changeovers. The LabelLine FL4p offers widths of 430mm to 570mm with advanced registration control and optional in-line embellishment.

The CartonLine FL6p operates at 600mm to 650mm and integrates in-line print, varnish, embellishment, die-cutting, and stripping. The CartonLine FL7p handles larger formats from 760mm to 1000mm. Both CartonLine configurations can be specified to run carton and label work.

Koenig & Bauer has demonstrated the Rapida 76's flexibility for commercial, label and packaging printing at an open house in Radebeul, Germany, where the B2 press showed live job changes between complex commercial, label and folding carton jobs while processing board up to 1.0 mm thick at 18,000 sheets per hour.

The press utilizes automation components from the Rapida 106 'Royal Class', including simultaneous makeready processes and the sidelay-free infeed system DriveTronic SIS, which reduce job changeover times by up to 30 percent and drastically reduce waste.

'This open house has made one thing absolutely clear to me: the time for compromises in the B2 format is over,' stated Markus Weiß, CEO of Koenig & Bauer Paper & Packaging Sheetfed Systems. 'We have consistently transferred the proven high-end technology of our Rapida 106 Royal Class to this format. The result is a machine that resolves the either-or in this segment.'

Nearly 100 printing professionals from across Europe attended the event, where users confirmed the press's performance in practice. Matthias Herrmann, managing director at Schmidt & Buchta, emphasized the machine's reliability in a high-performance environment with an average of 19 commercial job changes per day, while Oscar Pepermans, owner of Rutgers Printing & Packaging Solutions in the Netherlands, highlighted that the investment provides a significant competitive advantage.

The press features inline quality control systems including QualiTronic ColorControl and PDFCheck, which ensure color accuracy from the first sheet and reduce makeready time by up to 30 percent per job. High-end double coating units and cold foil packages enable premium finishing in a single pass.

Kartongbolaget invests in Fujifilm Jet Press 750S

Swedish packaging specialist Kartongbolaget has enhanced its production capabilities with a Fujifilm Jet Press 750S, which the company invested in at drupa 2024 and installed in December.

Founded in 1944, Kartongbolaget employs 48 staff and offers a full-service approach covering proofing to short-run, highly customized packaging with fast turnarounds. The investment marks the company's first collaboration with Fujifilm.

Visutech's field service engineers installed the press, ensuring seamless start-up and local service support as Fujifilm's distribution partner in the Nordics.

'We installed the Jet Press 750S in December 2024 and began production in January,' commented Joakim Johansson, CEO of Kartongbolaget. 'Not only did it relieve pressure on our offset equipment for shorter runs, but it's also been a game-changer in terms of speed and flexibility, especially when responding to urgent customer deadlines. Our start-up customers benefit from cost-effective short runs with the flexibility to scale, while our more established brands value the fast turnaround and high quality work delivered on demand.'

The press reproduces 90 percent of the Pantone range, enabling accurate proofs before full runs. Johansson highlights improved uptime compared to the company's previous digital press, along with robust sheet transport and machine stability.

'As a business committed to sustainable practices, we also saw the Jet Press 750S as a strong asset to our environmental strategy as it supports our zero-waste ambitions and helps us deliver a clearer, more powerful message to our eco-conscious customers,' Johansson added.

The press will be central to Kartongbolaget's continued evolution, allowing faster planning and greater flexibility while reinforcing its position as a packaging supplier in Scandinavia.

Global packaging company Elopak has added a third production line at its Little Rock, Arkansas, plant in response to demand for its sustainable Pure-Pak cartons.

Announcing the news at Elopak’s quarterly results presentation, CEO Thomas Körmendi said: 'This is a significant achievement. Just four months after officially opening in Little Rock, we are already adding two new production lines. This is a testament to the quality of our low-carbon, sustainable Pure-Pak cartons, which are resonating with brands and consumers alike. I’d like to thank all our colleagues at Little Rock and our Americas team for their hard work, dedication and incredible levels of effort, which are clearly paying off.'

The new line will cost 30 million USD to bring online and will produce a mix of smaller Pure-Pak cartons, including school milk cartons, to better serve the needs of Elopak’s customers and grow with them.

In April 2025, Elopak opened its Arkansas plant with production capacity selling out before a single carton had left the factory floor. In September 2025, the company announced it was investing in a second production line ahead of schedule to compensate for higher-than-expected demand. Production on this line is predicted to start in 2026.

Elopak’s first-ever US production plant represents a total investment of 128 million USD. It employs around 100 people and produces Pure-Pak cartons for dairy, juice, plant-based drinks and liquid eggs.

Expanding the company’s footprint in North America is a significant part of Elopak’s ‘Repackaging tomorrow’ strategy, which seeks to double revenue to 2 billion EUR by 2030.

Elopak reported its highest quarterly EBITDA to date of 49.1 million EUR in the third quarter of 2025, corresponding to a 17.0 percent margin. Organic revenue grew by 1.2 percent year-over-year to 289.7 million EUR, driven by continued momentum in the US, with sales growth of 18 percent on a constant-currency basis. The US plant in Little Rock delivered its first profitable quarter, marking a key milestone in Elopak’s strategic expansion.

Global folding carton demand forecast to reach 63.1 million tons by 2030

Global consumption of cartonboard will reach 56.3 million tons in 2025, valued at 58.9 billion USD, according to research from Smithers, with conversion into 52.4 million tons of packaging valued at 132.8 billion USD.

The research provider's report 'The Future of Folding Cartons to 2030' projects that demand will push global consumption of folding cartons to 63.1 million tons in 2030, with value increasing to 159.6 billion USD at constant pricing. Demand for cartonboard and microflute packaging is driven by global sustainability trends, with a marked shift away from plastic packaging formats in favor of paper-based alternatives and general growth in demand from emerging economies in the Asia-Pacific region and Africa.

Smithers analysis identifies applications where cartonboard is poised to take market share from plastics, including collation and shrink-wrap films used in consumer multi-packs, trays for fresh produce and foodservice applications and development of all-paper blisters for products like stationery.

Growth will be highest in confectionery, chilled food, foodservice, soft drinks and beer segments. The greatest share of increased incremental demand across 2025 to 2030 will come from healthcare customers, reflecting mainly new sales into developing regions of Asia accompanied by design innovation in mature markets.

Folding boxboard and coated recycled board or white-lined chipboard remain the most widely used folding carton grades, together accounting for 83.8 percent of contemporary demand. From 2025 to 2030, folding boxboard will continue to grow market share with new paper machines coming online in Brazil, China and elsewhere in Asia. Extra capacity for solid bleached board or sulfate is also coming on stream supporting further sales over this period, while sales of solid unbleached board or sulfate and uncoated recycled board grades will continue to track below the market average.

Tamar Packaging Solutions blazes trail in folding carton

Tamar Packaging Solutions shows how in-line converting and problem-solving can create a powerful niche in the folding carton market.

Located in the stunning Tamar Valley in Southwest England, Tamar Packaging Solutions has carved a successful niche in the folding carton market using Edale in-line flexo technology.

The company specializes in direct food contact carton board products for the FMCG market, including printed U-cards, base cards, tray inserts and folded/glued cartons and sleeves, primarily for the bakery markets.

Privately owned Tamar Packaging Solutions is run on a day-to-day basis by technical operations manager Paul Baker.

Baker has a long history in the labels industry. Before joining what was then Tamar Labels in 2011, he had worked for 12 years at Chesapeake’s Yatton, Bristol site, working his way up from rewind department to pre-press, then Mark Andy operator.

In 2014, Tamar Labels sold off the labels side of the business and stripped out the Mark Andy, Nilpeter and HP Indigo presses, leaving only a solitary 4-color Edale Sigma press, which mainly produced U-cards for pastry products.

Tamar Packaging then found itself with a unique opportunity to start the business again, ‘pretty much from scratch’, Baker says.

Focusing only on paperboard and carton products, by 2017, the business was strong enough to install a new Edale FL5-510 press.

Covid proved a turning point. ‘We grew through Covid by taking on a lot of new customers,’ recalls Baker. ‘We took risks by purchasing board materials we had no orders for, but soon started to roll through it.’

At the height of the pandemic in 2020, Tamar purchased a 2-color Edale FL5 mainly for blank card work, and an Edale slitterrewinder to slit down master rolls. In 2022, Tamar added another 8-color Edale FL5 carton press.

Flatbed in-line
Tamar Packaging’s most recent acquisition is an Edale FL5 equipped with in-line flatbed die-cutting/creasing. The new FL5 has a wider web width of 530mm and can handle thicker board materials up to 700 microns.

Like Tamar’s other FL5 presses, the machine is equipped with Edale’s full automation package, including AiiR autonomous inking, auto impression and print registration, along with jumbo unwinds, rail-mounted turnbars, UV and IR drying/curing capability, BST monitors and shingling delivery tables.

Where Tamar’s existing FL5 presses are equipped with rotary die-cutting, the new machine is configured with an in-line flatbed die-cutting/creasing module.

‘The only problem we found with rotary tooling is getting the high level of crease,’ explains Baker. ‘Rotary is great for perfing and creasing U-cards, but not for folding cartons. You can only achieve a high level of creasing with solid male and female dies, but these can be very expensive for a set, which means you need a very long running job to make it cost-effective. Up to now, we have potentially been missing out on a lot of folding carton work. So, the purchase of the flatbed die-cutter opens up new markets for us.’

Finding a niche
The folding carton market is dominated by highly consolidated groups using sheet-fed offset technology and multi-stage finishing. Tamar Packaging Solutions has thrived by working out where in-line flexo can, and cannot, compete.

Explains Baker: ‘It’s been a big learning curve for us. Initially, we were trying to quote on everything. We found that we couldn’t compete on the bigger blank sizes when going up against the litho guys because we can only get two to three blanks on one repeat. But, if you start to find the sweet spots where the format size fits and where we can print and coat in-line, we can take the edge back. But it took a long time to get there.’

Tamar Packaging’s key competitive advantage against litho is the ability to coat, print and crease/die-cut in one pass. ‘On the Edale FL5 presses, we can coat and then print up to seven colors on the other side at speeds up to 150m/min.

Edale board slitter-rewinder

‘Working to customer forecasts, we can forward plan raw materials three to four months ahead whilst normally holding one to two weeks finished stock, therefore being able to react quickly to changes on demand or the need for promotional designs without having to wait for large quantities of old stock to be used up,’ says Baker.

‘With our larger customers, they place forward orders, which we print when it makes most sense for us, then we hold stock that they can call off at 48 hours’ notice. We work in a similar way with our board suppliers, so we can call stock off, including mixed loads.’

In 2023, Tamar Packaging acquired its first Vega off-line straight gluing machine, allowing the company to take this critical process step in-house. The Vega can handle a wide variety of box sizes and styles, from cartons to sleeves.

Coatings expertise
Tamar Packaging Solutions’ real superpower is the ability to solve customers’ performance and sustainability challenges with coating technology.

In the bakery sector, for example, grease migration traditionally requires the use of a plastic barrier to protect the board from contamination. Working with its coating suppliers,

Tamar now offers a selection of grease and moisture-resistant varnish barriers specifically designed for direct food contact, eliminating the need to use plastic.

‘Coatings and specialist barriers which we apply in-line are an absolute game-changer for us,’ says Baker. ‘Where coatings also have to work as a heat seal layer, we can make sure our coatings match the heat-sealing properties of PE.’

Tamar used to buy barrier materials for these applications. ‘But now we apply our own coatings and come up with levels of coating that work with different products. We know which anilox to use for which application. So, every product has its own level of coating.

On our Edale presses, we put barrier coating on one side, flip the web over and print on the other side and then die-cut all in one pass.’

Coatings suppliers have collaborated with Tamar Packaging to test their new technologies.

‘We work closely with our board and coating suppliers, which often involves a lot of trial and error, to get the best products for our customers. We have found that some customers are buying boards that are over-specified for their products, where we can apply coatings to just the level they need. Once customers have successfully tested a particular coating, we record that information, so each individual customer has their own specification.’

Continues Baker: ‘Our main push is toward using natural barriers, which do not impact recycling. Our customers are also asking us to test for compostability. There is still a lot of work to do on certain products to make them fully recyclable, but we will get there.’

In 2022, Tamar Packaging became FSC-accredited for the supply of boards suitable for direct and indirect food contact.

While bakery packaging is at the core of Tamar Packaging’s business, other end-use markets are also growing rapidly. These include frozen foods, where water-resistant coatings and high-quality graphics are required, and ‘hot food on the move’, with hot cabinet displays becoming more common in supermarkets, forecourts and even vending machines. The future
It is worth pointing out that the workforce at Tamar Packaging is just 12 production staff.

Such a lean workforce can be largely attributed to the automation on the Edale presses.

‘Automation has taken a lot of the fun out of printing,’ laughs Baker, ‘and servicing has become more difficult.’

Following the installation of the new Edale FL5, Baker has taken on a new production supervisor and is in the process of adding new production staff.

With its unique combination of in-line flexo production, product diversification and coatings expertise, Tamar Packaging Solutions looks set for a bright future in one of print’s most competitive markets.

Food-safe and sustainable

Tamar Packaging’s plant and production operations are optimized for food safety applications, built around an AA-grade BRC accreditation.

The company selects either water-based or low-migration UV inks, depending on the food-contact sensitivity of each job. Says Baker, ‘We select the inks, DFC inks and coatings on a case-by-case basis because of the wide range of scenarios such as length of time the product comes into contact with the card, types of food and the moisture levels within the product. We only use UV inks on non-direct food contact surfaces. All our coatings are water-based, so they are perfect for direct food contact.’

Tamar Packaging also prides itself on being a highly sustainable business. The company has implemented a ducted waste removal system on its carton presses and rewinder. This guarantees the efficient removal of all carton board process waste from the factory, which is then processed by a chopper fan and the waste is subsequently directed into a recycling skip, promoting a zero-to-landfill approach. Additionally, all plastic waste is recycled.

‘Our dedication to minimizing our environmental impact and contributing to the sustainable growth of flexographic printing remains unwavering,’ Baker says.
