The 14-year-old privately owned firm began life as a letterpress shop and still services a considerable proportion of turnover of predominantly smaller jobs with one of its four Hikari letterpress machines.

It made its first investment in HP Indigo digital press technology two years ago, company managing director Chris Goodwin quoted as saying that the purchase of its latest HP Indigo press is aimed at catering for an increasing number of variable data jobs and other label work on which the firm might otherwise miss out as a result of conventional printing cost structures, such as letterpress plates.

Further, Lighting Labels’ investment is said to be aimed at coping with the expansion of its digital  volumes, which currently stand at 20-25 percent of total turnover and growing.

As an indication of the high standard of its work, the company won two gold prizes at last year’s New Zealand Pride in Print Awards.
