Australian paper body rebrands as APPIA
The name change reflects growth of fiber-based packaging across the ANZ region.
The Australasian Paper Industry Association has rebranded as the Australasian Paper and Packaging Industry Association, known as APPIA, reflecting the expansion of fiber-based packaging across Australia and New Zealand and the growing role of international mills and fiberboard substrate manufacturers in the regional supply chain.
Executive director Kellie Northwood said fiber-based packaging categories in Australia had grown more than 50 percent over the past decade, with APPIA's membership now spanning paper manufacturers, packaging converters, fiberboard substrate suppliers, merchants and recyclers.
'The industry we represent today is broader, more sophisticated and more strategically important than at any other point in recent history,' said Northwood. ‘Fiber-based packaging has experienced extraordinary growth across Australia and New Zealand as governments, brands and consumers seek more sustainable packaging solutions. Our Association has evolved alongside that growth, and it is critical our identity reflects the full breadth of the industries we represent.’
APPIA holds a seat on the APCO Materials Stewardship Committee and is engaged in consultations on kerbside recyclability frameworks and packaging guideline reforms. A new industry website is due to launch in the coming quarter.
