Cham Paper Group is investing in new curtain coating technology. Originating from use in the photographic industry, curtain coating is a non-contact application process for clay and other coatings and thus offers innovation potential for specialty paper production.

Located in central Switzerland, the company has already gained broad experience in developing new paper on a lab pilot coater. The decision to invest in a production-scale coater will accelerate completion of projects, currently at various stages of development.

Know-how gleaned from the pilot coater will enable the Cham mill to create a range of new products within the next 1–2 years.

Total investment in the project will be CHF 20 million. Andritz BMB AG, based in Blach, Switzerland has been commissioned to build the coater and initial preparations have already been undertaken. Start-up of the new machine is scheduled for spring 2009.
