Food safety leads BS Labels to invest in Xeikon

- Invested in digital to meet demands of brand owners

- Xeikon QA-I toner is FDA approved for specific indirect and direct food contact applications

Self-adhesive label specialist BS Labels has moved into digital printing by investing in a Xeikon 3300 press, with the press manufacturer’s FDA-approved QA-I toner allowing the UK printer to meet the demands required of food packaging.

BS Labels is a supplier of high-quality self-adhesive labels to the food, industrial, commercial and retail markets.

It has previously operated with eight flexo and three letterpress presses.

The company opted to invest in a digital press to enable it to meet the demands of brand owners and production managers for flexibility from their suppliers, notably in providing shorter runs on a range of substrates for an increasing number of SKUs.

BS Labels also complies with the BRC Global Standards, a suite of four technical standards to enable the production, packaging, storage and distribution of safe food and consumer products. The Xeikon QA-I toner is FDA approved for specific indirect and direct food contact applications.

BS Labels took time to compare digital press solutions before deciding to invest in the Xeikon 3300 system.

The main decision criteria for choosing to invest in the Xeikon 3300 were quality, availability of food contact-approved toner technology and flexible performance.

Tony Pickering, managing director and owner of BS Labels, said: ‘The Xeikon 3300 solution is ideal to complement our large flexo operation.

‘Not only will it make us much more competitive for short to medium runs, it will also allow us to take away the pressure on the flexo and letterpress department for quick turnaround jobs.’

Pickering added: ‘It took us some time to decide for digital technology. Looking at the Xeikon toner, their compatibility towards food contact requirements were a key driver in our decision as we mainly operate in the food label market.’
