MCC joins Malaysian Recycling Alliance

Global label converter MCC Label has joined the Malaysian Recycling Alliance (MAREA) as an associate contributor to help in achieving sustainability goal of 25 percent post-consumer packaging in the country.

MCC Label has joined the Malaysian Recycling Alliance (MAREA) as an associate contributor

MAREA is Malaysia’s first voluntary, non-profit, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) group. The consortium was established in January 2021 with ten initial member companies, including Coca-Cola Malaysia, Colgate-Palmolive Malaysia, Dutch Lady Milk Industries, Etika Group, Fraser & Neave Holdings, Mondelez International (Malaysia), Nestle Malaysia, Spritzer, Unilever Malaysia and Tetra Pak Malaysia.

The Malaysian government has committed to having 25 percent of post-consumer packaging recycled by 2025. In line with this goal, MAREA aims for the same, to recycle a minimum of 25 percent of its members’ packaging volumes by the same year.

The consortium will support this goal by promoting the circular use of packaging in Malaysia via education, collection and recycling projects. MAREA will focus on collecting, separating, and recycling four post-consumer packaging materials: PET bottles, HDPE, flexible plastic packaging and used beverage cartons.

‘As a global supplier of premium label solutions, the collaboration with MAREA is really important for us as this will ensure that we can provide the optimal solutions for the Malaysian market,’ said Ivan Lee, head of technical, R&D and sustainability for Asia at MCC Label.
