SMI Coated Products became the first Indian company to host a Master Class at Labelexpo Europe 2019. The company conducted a session during the Label Academy's Flexible Packaging Master Class during the show.
Ajay Mehta, managing director of SMI Coated Products, said: ‘It was a fantastic experience to address an international audience who are a part of the industry and are keen to learn more. We presented on how to identify materials and which ones are used for specific applications. We were delighted with the meaningful interaction and response we received during the session. It has been our endeavor to spread knowledge and we look forward to more such experiences in the future. SMI is thankful to the Label Academy for offering this opportunity.’

As a regular participant at Labelexpo Europe, the company focused on filmic labelstock this year. ‘Our repositionable wet wipes have gained a lot of traction. We further discussed a number of niche products addressing problem areas of new and existing customers at the show floor. We had a fantastic time meeting the global label industry,’ said corporate director Rohit Mehta.

Ajay Mehta was upbeat about the growth of the Indian label industry. ‘Our printers and suppliers continue to invest and prepare for a bright future. They have shown it again by booking multiple orders at Labelexpo. The perceived slowdown will not affect our industry,’

Turning to sustainability, one of the biggest trends at this year's Labelexpo, Mehta said that it comes at a price that the end customer will have to be prepared to pay. ‘It is a trickle right now [in India] but very soon will be a big movement. With the government’s announcement of single-use plastic ban by 2022, disruption has begun for greener and cleaner future.’

Label Manufacturers’ Association of India (LMAI) has formed a panel to initiate recycling of industrial waste. The association is in touch with recycling facilities and will support the industry to recycle waste in an efficient manner.
