PowerID, a supplier of battery-assisted, passive (BAP) RFID technology, has announced that Grupo Diverscan, an automatic identification system integrator in Costa Rica, has chosen PowerID labels to provide accurate information and minimize errors in the Republic of Costa Rica’s upcoming local government elections.

Acting as the lead integrator for the project, Grupo Diverscan developed an application, along with software developer IDGEN, to ensure the efficient processing of ballots. The application will track bags delivered to voting centers across Costa Rica that, at the end of election day, will be returned to the centralized vote counting facility with ballots in them. PowerID labels are placed in all the bags containing ballots.  When the bags arrive at the facility, they are identified. This data is fed into the application immediately so that officials have visibility on any missing bags as well as the polling station that ‘owns’ the bag.

‘We selected PowerID labels because of the challenging nature of the voting process,’ said Wilbert De La Hormoza, CEO of Grupo Diverscan. ‘When the ballots arrive at the processing center, they are in numerous stacked bags that pass through a portal.  All bags must be read simultaneously without a margin of error; while passive tags were unable to provide us the performance we required, PowerID labels met our stringent demands.’

Grupo Diverscan intends to deploy the application in future elections in Costa Rica as well as elections taking place in other countries in the region. The company also expects to use PowerID BAP technology in other government applications, such as asset monitoring, access control for temporary employees, etc.

‘We are thrilled that our BAP RFID labels are being deployed to improve efficiency in the elections in the Republic of Costa Rica,’ said Erez Kahani, CEO of PowerID. ‘We are also happy to launch our first large-scale application in Latin America with a prestigious system integrator such as Grupo Diverscan after successfully deploying in other parts of the world.’
