Label Summit South China, which took place at the end of 2006 in Guangzhou, attracted 455 label printers and converters. The event was the first major conference to bring prominent international experts to South China and provided a strong educational focus for regional label printers. The summit was hosted by Labelexpo, organizers of the Labelexpo Asia 2007 show.

Experts from China and other large label markets took center stage and shared their in-depth knowledge with the delegation at the Guangzhou summit. Hot topics on the agenda included: short- and long-term industry trends, innovation in the Chinese label market, an analysis of the pressure sensitive label market in China, the latest developments in RFID/smart labels, advances in digital printing and new anti-counterfeiting processes, to name a few. Senior professionals from brand owner organizations also presented practical case studies helping local label printers to learn more about the future needs of the increasing number of end-users moving their operations to China.

Highlights on the conference program featured a keynote presentation by Mr Haixiang Shen, chairman & executive director of Kodak Graphics, who discussed the prospects for growth and innovation in the Chinese label market. On the first day, Mr Junqiao Tan from The Printing & Printing Equipment Industries Association of China (PEIAC) gave a full overview of the Chinese labeling and product decoration market. On the final day, Mr Y F Wong, head of technical services and procurement at the Hong Kong Airport Authority, presented a detailed case-study on the use of RFID in the airline industry in China.

In addition to presentations, a panel session featuring key narrow web press suppliers focused on the current status of the main converting technologies in China. The session covered combination printing and UV flexo in particular, and proved to be amongst the most popular of the event.

Roger Pellow, Labelexpo managing director, said: ‘We’re very pleased with the results of Label Summit South China; it was a fantastic gathering of global label experts and Chinese printers making it an important event for the region’s fast-growing label industry. We’re very excited to be back in China in November 2007 with the Labelexpo Asia show in Shanghai and look forward to welcoming the industry to this important regional event.’

In addition to the conference, Label Summit South China also featured a tabletop exhibition with international companies showcasing their latest innovations. Exhibitors included: Avery Dennison, Mark Andy/United Printing, Gallus, Nilpeter, Omet, Exxon Mobil, HP, Gidue/Jebsen, UPM Raflatac, Yupo, AM Ramp & Co, Rotometrics International, Gerhardt, Dowell Swiss and IST Metz, to name a few.
