PRPflexo, a pre-press services and flexographic printing plate provider based in Indianapolis, USA, has developed a new printing plate specifically engineered to address sustainability issues in packaging.

PRPflexo, which launched flat-top dot plate technology in 2004, has successfully applied the VIPeR plate for multiple line-up 1- and 2-color corrugated shipping containers.

The VIPeR (value in-position environmentally responsible) plate is the fifth installment in its range, each designed for specific applications in the field of packaging and displays for all substrates.

VIPeR plates are lightweight, saving on shipping costs, and are processed in environmentally friendly soap and water, instead of hydrocarbon solvents used to manufacture sheet photopolymer. VIPeR plates are imaged ‘in‐position’ as one piece from the electronic file or can be modified to accommodate strip mounting or slugs.

Chris Green, general manager of PRPflexo, explained: ‘We recognized over the past several years that issues of sustainability have become very important for our customers, and we also recognized these issues needed to be addressed in a complete cost-effective package. The VIPeR plate succeeds in both areas, with a 70 percent weight reduction, 80 percent reduction in energy during the manufacturing process, while the overall production process enables the material to have a 50 percent reclaim and reuse value.

‘As a supplier to both consumer packaged goods companies and printers, our primary goal in developing new products is to bring value to both parties. The VIPeR plate delivers cost-savings for both parties, with reduced material costs and reduced shipping costs. It also delivers in the manufacturing environment, as it is significantly easier to handle and store in comparison to a conventional sheet plate. Additionally, we have the ability to make a VIPeR plate that is able to accept slugs, for maximum flexibility.’

Use of the new VIPeR plate qualifies for two points on the Walmart Sustainability Scorecard.
