ORBID Corporation, Florida, a developer of secure track and trace systems used in the identification and protection of products, has announced a partnership with CCL Label. CCL Label has incorporated ORBID's patented 2DMI coding system into its newly developed security packaging for the pharmaceutical industry, which will even enable individual units to be traced.
‘With this innovative labeling and packaging it will be possible to validate the authenticity of pharmaceutical products throughout the supply chain, from manufacturer, to distributor, to pharmacy, to consumer,’ says Kevin Simmons, managing director of sales for the ORBID Corporation. ‘As the debate on the rising costs of drugs for consumers continues, this new tracking capability gives the pharmaceutical industry the ability to demonstrate to authorities all over the world that there are existing and cost-effective ways to protect consumers from the growing threat of counterfeit pharmaceuticals.’
The security labels developed by CCL Label, and enhanced by ORBID's 2DMI coding system, will provide manufacturers and pharmacies with a tool that verifies that drug shipments, down to the smallest unit level, are authentic and authorized. The previous inability to track and validate authenticity beneath the level of large batches left room for counterfeiting, piracy and diversion (CPD) – practices that decrease safety levels, cut into product sales, and cause the long term erosion of brand value if left unchecked.
‘We are confident that this long-awaited coding system is the key to stopping counterfeiting, theft and diversion,’ says Rob Ryckman, director of marketing and product development at CCL's Healthcare Solution Group. ‘With ORBID's 2DMI coding system, brand owners will be able to determine a drug's origin and have the ability to cross-check for authenticity as well.’
ORBID's 2DMI system utilizes security marks that can be unobtrusively incorporated into any of CCL Label's packaging and label designs. Each 2DMI mark is unique and can be printed in virtually any color, in any size, and on any surface while remaining rapidly scanable by commercial off-the-shelf cameras and standard imagers.
2DMI is a closed system and the marks appear as unintelligible graphical representations of encrypted data. Only the manufacturer of the pharmaceutical will hold the unique algorithm that unlocks the data represented by the marks, making mass reproduction of marks by counterfeiters impossible.
