Scholarships endowed for Phoenix Challenge winners
Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) of Charlotte, N.C., has announced the endowment of three full tuition 'Ron and Katherine Harper Scholarships' to be awarded in April 2005 to winners of the Phoenix Challenge Flexo Competition.
Each year, CPCC's Harper Campus hosts the intense, two-day competition where high-school students from around the U.S. and Canada compete on two Mark Andy and two Comco flexo presses, in addition to taking written and pre-press tests. This year the Phoenix Challenge is scheduled for April 8-9, 2005.
Bettylyn Krafft, chairman of the Phoenix Challenge Foundation, estimates that 45 to 50 students will compete in the 2005 event. All participating high schools are enrolled in the FTA Flexo In High Schools program, and each school has either a Mark Andy or Comco press in its lab for hands-on flexographic training.
The Ron and Katherine Harper Scholarships are also available to other high school students who preferably have an interest in learning flexography at the Harper National Flexographic Center at CPCC.
