DataLase, originator of the award winning DataLase process, has announced that its DataLase Packmark solution has been chosen by Schreiner MediPharm to apply lot and bar codes on to pharmaceutical labels. DataLase Packmark enabled the company to produce labels where the variable information can be integrated into the design of the label, in keeping with the ‘clean’ clinical look that is favored on pharmaceutical labels.

Schreiner MediPharm, a division of Schreiner High Tech Group, developes and manufactures value-added labels for the pharmaceutical industry. Traditionally, when pharmaceutical companies are using laser marking systems, a patch of black ink would be applied on the label and then ablated the ink to produce a negative image. Thus the variable information was included in a cumbersome black patch, which did not fit in with the clean clinical style of the rest of the label. In contrast, DataLase Packmark uses a low power CO2 laser to produce a positive black image on a white background without ink ablation. The area to be marked is coated with DataLase Packmark, and the laser then causes a chemical color change in the coating. This process demonstrates high-speed marking capability and excellent resistance against rubbing for maximum brand protection. No additional printing foil is required.

The company said in a statement: ‘DataLase Packmark is a much simpler, cost-effective and environmentally friendly technology than traditional printing techniques. The laser-based print engine is highly efficient with almost 100% production uptime. The lifetime of the laser is over 30,000 hours and compared to thermal and ink jet printers it requires little maintenance and no replacing of print heads due to wear and tear.’

‘We are extremely pleased with the results achieved with DataLase Packmark,’ comments Peter Seidl, director technical support, Schreiner MediPharm. ‘By replacing traditional marking systems with this solution we have managed to produce labels that are in keeping with the pharmaceutical style, while also achieving reductions in costs and time as well as increased production efficiency.’

Trevor Wilson, VP business development, DataLase, commented: ‘With more than 50 years of industry experience, Schreiner MediPharm is well positioned to identify innovative solutions and we are proud that DataLase Packmark has been recognized as such.’
