St. Paul, Minnesota-based converter Smyth Companies, Inc., has received the 2005 'Spirit of Excellence' Award for outstanding vendors from customer Hormel Foods.

Smyth supplies Hormel with package labels and point-of-purchase displays for many of Hormel's brands. The award is given to Hormel suppliers who attain superior rankings in a number of product and service categories, including delivery performance, product quality, customer service, administration and plant quality audits. Smyth and Hormel are among the oldest established businesses in Minnesota, and their relationship dates back to the 1930s. Since then, Smyth has provided Hormel with a variety of printed products, including package labels, commercial printing for internal and external communication pieces, and point-of-purchase displays.

With 2005 sales of more than $85 million, Smyth is one of the largest label producers in the US. The converter also makes in-pack and on-pack promotional labels, specialty packaging for liquid products, and supplies label-application equipment. The company operates five production facilities located in Minnesota, Virginia and Colorado. It employs approximately 400 people.
