Soma Engineering has won the Design Center of the Czech Republic Award for the 2007 Excellent Product of the Year with its new Casings Technology flexographic printing press and Soma Cut Puresheet sheeting machine.

Assessed by an international team of judges, the award recognizes companies designing products in the field of graphic and product design that capture the relationship between the user and the product. Judging concluded that while serving different functions, each Soma product stood out because of a logical design concept based on precise production technology and ergonomics with combined aesthetic qualities unique for this type of equipment.

Aimed at food packaging, the Soma Casings Technology press permits accurate printing on both the front and reverse of sensitive films totally in register while reversing the web and includes automatic register compensation, front and rear side, irrespective of variations in substrate characteristics. The technology is based on a turn bar that uses an air pillow under the actual width of the web. An edge compensation system is incorporated within the design to avoid problems that can arise from reels of material that have been damaged during transportation or storage. The web accumulator incorporated into this press enables the operator to utilize the full length of the reel without wasting any of these expensive materials.

The design features of the new Soma Cut Puresheet are still under wraps until its official launch. Current design is based on a web width of 1016mm (40”) for speeds up to 370m/min (1,215 fpm).
