Sappi has pledged its commitment and support to ‘Two Sides’, the industry-wide initiative launched by the UK’s National Association of Paper Merchants – NAPM – to tackle paper’s environmental credentials.

Marco Eikelenboom, sales and marketing director for Sappi Europe, said, ‘We are delighted that the NAPM has launched this initiative and believe that “Two Sides” should be welcomed by all organizations that are involved with the paper and print industry. There are many erroneous statements made about the environmental impact of our industry and the “Two Sides” approach, which is to take a more balanced view of the issue, is helping to explain the facts around paper as they really are.’

The recent European Commission’s approval for Sappi’s acquisition of many of the manufacturing assets of M-Real’s Commercial Print Division will make Sappi the largest European manufacturer of coated fine paper.

Speaking on behalf of ‘Two Sides’, Martyn Eustace, who is currently heading up the project, said he was pleased with Sappi’s support. ‘Having Sappi on board is an important step on the road to getting the wide industry support needed.

‘We also have pledges of support from many other organizations and I’m confident we’ll reach the funding necessary to sustain the campaign through 2009 and beyond.’

NAPM members have agreed a commitment to fund a further GBP 45,000 on the ‘Two Sides’ campaign next year, and the ambition is to raise over 150,000 from all sectors of the industry.
