Narrow, medium and wide web clean machine technology specialist Teknek Manufacturing Ltd won a Silver Award in the European Flexographic Technology Association’s  (EFTA) ‘Cash in Waste’ category with its Contact Cleaning System for label production.

Teknek product manager Roy Cannon said: ‘In the production of labels, contamination is a big contributor to waste – not only in terms of scrap but also in lost production time, wasted ink and wasted energy, etc. In today’s highly competitive production environment where label converters and others are operating on tight profit margins any waste is unacceptable and impacts on bottom line performance.’

Over the last eight years Teknek has introduced the label sector to the benefits of Contact Cleaning, a process that was originally developed for the electronics industry and is now employed by a number of leading label press manufacturers as a productivity quality enhancer system of choice.

Simple in concept but requiring precision manufacturing techniques – a web is cleaned using a specially designed elastomer roller. This roller removes dry unattached particles from the web, transferring them to a reverse wound adhesive pre-sheeted roll. When the adhesive on one layer is full, it is removed and the process repeated. Contamination down to two micron is permanently removed from the web.
