World record press for Chesapeake

- Part of major investment program across Europe
- Press made up of 17 units
Chesapeake’s branded packaging division has installed the world’s largest B1 sheet-fed offset press at its plant in East Kilbride, Scotland in the form of a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106 perfector.
The Heidelberg press has 17 units, made up of 10 printing, three coating, four drying and an in-line cold foiling option.
Tim Whitfield, vice president of Chesapeake’s branded packaging division, said: ‘We supply some of the world’s most prestigious brands and many of the packs demand ultra-high quality finishes and outstanding shelf appeal.
‘The new Heidelberg brings a number of these processes in-line, including multiple color applications, foiling and a range of matte, gloss and pearlescent finishes, including metallics, spot and solid applications.’
The new Speedmaster has coating units before and after printing and perfecting to provide customers with a range of finishes and effects inside as well as outside the box. It can also handle a choice of substrate without compromising a pack’s aesthetic appeal.
It is part of a major investment program that includes carton operations in Germany and Poland, and the UK’s first Heidelberg VLF packaging press, which is installed at its Newcastle plant.
Speaking for Heidelberg UK, sales director Jim Todd said: ‘This B1 press will satisfy current and future brand-owner requirements with Autoplate XL plate-changing and logistics fully automated materials handling to maximize efficiency.’
