Brand protection – the role of security labeling and packaging

When products contain high value material content they present an attractive target to counterfeiters

In the introduction to security and product protection it was disclosed that branded products have a value which is often much higher than their worth in terms of materials, construction and distribution costs. When products contain very high value material content they present an attractive target to counterfeiters who can substitute high cost ingredients with much cheaper but similar looking alternatives.

In illustration of this point many pharmaceutical products contain constituents that are very expensive to make and involve a high degree of research and development and testing before they can be placed on the market. Introducing fakes of such products into the distribution stream allows criminals to substitute expensive valuable goods with inexpensive substitutes. In doing this they can almost double their investment since they can then resell the authentic goods for close to their real worth.
