World’s largest slitter rewinder heads to China

- China Soft Packaging Group commissions three 11m-wide slitter rewinders in move to increase capacity by 50 percent; taking five weeks to ship from Europe
- Monoslit giant designed to process plastic films, such as PET, metallized film, PE and more as part of Goebel slitter rewinder portfolio for converting paper, film, foil and laminates
The widest slitter rewinder in the world will soon be shipped to China, with Goebel to supply a trio of monoslit giant machines to China Soft Packaging Group.
The monoslit giant has an operating width of 11m, and is intended for processing plastic films.
China Soft Packaging Group produces large volumes of plastic films a year, and wants to increase its production by 50 percent.
Trio on order
Convinced of the quality and the technical solutions on offer, China Soft Packaging Group commissioned Goebel with the construction of three 11m wide machines.
Within three months, several thousand parts were assembled and more than 3,000m of electric cable were laid.
The first machine is currently being packed in Darmstadt after testing, ready for transport to China. A total of 15 large wooden cases will be required for this; the three largest cases are up to 17m in length each. They contain the winding section of the machine, the slitting unit and the web in-feed frame of the machine.
Once at the Port of Hamburg, it will be loaded onto large container ships. It will take five weeks until the boxes reach the province of Fujian Fuzhou, China.
Commissioning is planned after reassembly at the works together with the customer. During this time, a team of experienced Goebel employees will monitor the assembly and will be at the customer’s disposal for some further days for on-site training.
Design
The grooved roller of the monoslit giant has a length of 11,370mm. The shaft has 5,450 grooves of approximately 1mm width, distributed over the entire roller width. This means that it is possible to slit finished rolls, which are between 300 and 3,300mm wide, in 2mm graduations. Slitting is carried out using razor blades, which engage precisely into these grooves.
The slitter rewinder accommodates stock rolls with a maximum diameter 1,500mm and processes them into finished rolls with a maximum diameter of 1,200mm. The unwind width can be selected by the customer himself; it is between 9,400mm and 10,400mm.
Future additions
In future, 18 winding stations will be available for 24 hour production and to process films with a thickness of 10 to 80 μm.
‘Over the entire speed range of 0-1,500m/min, the machine runs extremely smoothly,’ said Dr Hans-Peter Bauer, head of design engineering at Goebel. ‘That is unique for a slitter rewinder with these dimensions.’
In addition to the machine design, the peripherals and the internal power supply, for example, redesigned too. The set-up of the machine takes place at ground level, eliminating costly foundation works and cable ducts.
Dr Ralf Enderle, managing director of Goebel, said: ‘Both the many years of experience of our specialists in engineering and assembly, and the use of the latest technologies and materials are decisive components in the realization of such a project.
‘A product of such high-quality can only be created with teamwork between experts involved and with the inclusion of our partners on the supplier side. This means that Goebel is very well prepared for the challenges of the future.’
