Michelman launches bio-based food packaging coatings

Two new barrier coatings target paper packaging recyclability and SUPD compliance.

Michelman has launched two bio-based barrier coatings for fiber-based retail food packaging, Nuvita Life 4002 and Nuvita Life 4605, designed to deliver oil, grease and moisture barrier performance while supporting recyclability and compostability.

Nuvita Life 4002 is a heat seal coating providing oil and grease resistance, mineral oil barrier and strong seals across a wide sealing window. Nuvita Life 4605 is a topcoat delivering oil and grease resistance, water resistance and moisture barrier performance. Both coatings are 100 percent bio-based in dry film, microplastic-free and SUPD compliant, and are engineered to be crease resistant with a low coefficient of friction for compatibility with vertical form-fill-seal processing lines.

Target applications include pouches and sachets for dry foods, flow wraps for food bars and envelopes for tea. Both products are aligned with the European Single-Use Plastics Directive and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.

'The Nuvita Life series unlocks new possibilities for paperization in retail food applications,' said Lori Gobris, global marketing director for packaging at Michelman. 'These forward-looking technologies allow fiber-based packaging to deliver the high barrier performance converters and brands need while supporting compliance with regulations targeting plastic pollution and waste reduction.'

Michelman will showcase the coatings at Interpack 2026 in Düsseldorf.
