Short-run printed packaging; a supermarket odyssey – part 10.5

Short-run printed packaging; a supermarket odyssey – part 10.5

As it’s the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics tonight, I took the opportunity to grab some more photos of the Cadbury mascot chocolates on offer in London and beyond at the moment.

I’d photographed the retail display carton in my local supermarket for today’s main blog entry on themed short-run printed packaging, but wanted to take a closer look.

You can get Wenlock and Mandeville, the mascots for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, molded into small chocolate figures (pictured, below), which are sold in flexible packaging carrying their likenesses.

I was also pleasantly surprised to find Cadbury mascot lollipops (pictured, above), which I’d not seen before.

Again featuring Wenlock and Mandeville, the lollipops are longer than the figures and come molded to a stick. The packaging is also much more diverse, with the two mascots portraying different traditional London characters on individual packs, including a Beefeater and member of the Queen’s Guard.

While I was looking around, I also took the chance to photo a 1kg Cadbury Dairy Milk bar sold in a Union Flag carton.

Great for the patriotic and peckish, and patriotic chocoholics.

I’d like to know how this summer is being represented in stores near you through short-run printed packaging.

To contribute to this unscientific “study”, just snap a picture on your phone's camera and share it using your own Twitter account, mentioning @D_Pittman_PPW and using #packageprinting.

If you're not on Twitter, please email pictures to [email protected] so I can see what you see on the shelf this summer when it comes to themed short-run printed packaging.

You can even share your photos with us via the official Package Print Worldwide Facebook page.
