AWA reports growth in global extrusion coated market

Extrusion coating is a highly versatile and cost-effective process, providing a desired finish to the plastic surface on the packaging. Its value chain is complex, with many players, such as raw material and chemical suppliers, coaters, laminators, and users. 

AWA’s latest AWAreness report documents the status of the market from both global and regional perspectives. The end-user applications of extrusion coating are segmented into four main sectors: flexible packaging, liquid packaging, photographic, and commercial (with a further breakdown of commercial into 12 subsegments).

In 2021 AWA estimates the global market for extrusion coating to be approximately 123,150 mln sqm, equivalent to 19,805,205 tons, with the 2017-2021 CAGR of 3.6 percent. 

While these figures span general market applications of the global extrusion coating market, 39 percent of these volumes in mln sqm were in flexible packaging while only 16 percent share in tons, liquid packaging with 21 percent share of volume in mln sqm, contrasted with 44 percent share of volume measured in tons. The commercial sector, with a three percent share in both volume in mln sqm and tons, and photographic with the remaining one percent in mln sqm and two percent in volume measured in tons.

Regionally, Asia represents 44 percent of the market share in extrusion coating, with the highest 2021-2024 CAGR of 4.7 percent, relative to the 2.5 percent CAGR in North America and 1.9 percent CAGR in Europe.
