New food label laws good news for Australian printers

A local frozen food company was found to have imported fruit from China which caused Hepatitis A in consumers.

According to recent reports, the decision was made following an ‘unprecedented’ crisis meeting of health, agriculture and industry chiefs.

The Federal Agriculture Minister, Barnaby Joyce, has promised the new, simpler labeling system will clearly state the country where the produce was grown so that consumers can tell ‘at a glance’, although no bans on imported frozen products are planned.

Printing sources have said the decision by the Government augurs well for the label printing and converting industry in that new frozen food pack labels will have to be larger, more colourful and contain greater amounts of consumer information.
