French packaging printer goes big on short runs with Heidelberg

French packaging printer Cartoneo has installed a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 offset printing press as it looks to grow its market for short run jobs.
Cartoneo specializes in the production of surface-finished packaging in short and very short runs, as well as the design, printing and packaging of point-of-sale (PoS) items. It makes products for customers in the cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fashion and spirits industries, and also for small and exclusive vineyards in the Champagne region that operate in the high-price segment. Cartoneo said it is planning further market growth in these areas.
The Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 was installed at the end of 2011 in a specially constructed building at Cartoneo’s Geovreissiat site near the Swiss border. It has been installed with a coating unit and integrated UV equipment for printing with UV inks and coatings, and replaces a similar large format press from another manufacturer.
Cartoneo claims the press has enabled make-ready times to be cut by up to 30 percent thanks to a high level of automation and integrated control of color and register with Heidelberg’s Prinect Inpress Control. This has also significantly reduced paper waste and led to lower production costs – benefits that are all the more important when using substrates with surface finishing and this particular format, Cartoneo said. Heidelberg added that Cartoneo has been impressed by the press' print quality, with clean printing of screens and solids, and stable color balance during production.
Cartoneo also installed a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL162 at the same time in the new facility at Geovreissiat, which is used primarily for printing displays and PoS items. It has offered the company similar benefits to the Speedmaster XL 105.
The French packaging printer’s exacting requirements in terms of print quality and surface finishing options and its focus on very short runs were the main reasons that led it to opt for Speedmaster presses from Heidelberg, the printing press manufacturer said.
