Seydaco Packaging orders 8-color KBA-Flexotecnica Evo XD

Canadian packaging firm Seydaco Packaging has ordered an 8-color KBA-Flexotecnica Evo XD CI flexo press in order to maintain its growth and offer maximum flexibility to its customers.

David Seychell, president of Seydaco

Seydaco Packaging operates an array of sheet-fed printing and converting equipment, including two 41in, 6-color KBA Rapida 105 presses, a 41in, 7-color KBA Rapida 105 and a 10-color KBA Rapida 130 press with two coating stations, all of which are equipped with UV coating/curing. The KBA-Flexotecnica Evo XD signals its first foray into flexo printing, and gives it the capability to handle sheets and rolls.

David Seychell, president of Seydaco, said: ‘The entire flexo web line, including the new KBA-Flexotecnica 8-color CI plus two downstream units and double roll stands with auto splicer and festoon and flatbed die-cutting unit with rotary stripper, belt askew and delivery, will be unique in North America.

‘Flexotecnica is known worldwide for its superior, gearless, sleeved, central impression flexographic printing presses. We’re excited to be operating one of these fine presses in our facility. It will be miles ahead of anything in its class considerations.’

Once the new press is installed later this year at its facility in Mississauga, Canada, Seydaco Packaging’s intention is to use the KBA-Flexotecnica press to support mid- to long-run requirements at all of its related locations, and will complement the company’s existing sheet-fed press portfolio and allow it to offer competitive long-run carton production, possibly for export markets.  The new press will also continue to support Seydaco Packaging’s motto of flexibility and assist its sales staff with additional resources that they can offer to potential customers in the consumer package goods market. ‘The Evo XD will allow us to develop new skills and expertise in longer run orders, and one-pass printing on the front and back of substrates,’ Seychell said.

Initially, the firm will target paperboard foodservice packaging requirements, although has plans to target private label owners and consumer packaged goods companies with its extended capabilities.

Seydaco Packaging specializes in the manufacturing of stock and specialty paperboard products, and has become one of the largest suppliers of critical high-quality graphics for leading manufacturers of cake, pie, pastry and pizza cartons. Sister companies include Groupe Ecco, a folding carton manufacturer, pressure-sensitive label specialist Miramont Labels, and National Carton & Coating, a mid-to-large volume manufacturer of custom printed folding cartons, stock chipboard boxes and mailers.

Miramont Labels has provided the only previous exposure to flexo printing and in-line die-cutting, with a 13in flexo press used to produce pressure-sensitive labels.

Seydaco Packaging, Miramont Labels, Groupe Ecco and National Carton & Coating all pride themselves on offering maximum flexibility to all of their market segments, including a wide variety of folding carton and pressure-sensitive label services, which, according to Seychell, is the ‘main differentiator from competitors’, as whether a customer requires small, medium or long run capabilities, low key and high value-added carton capabilities, multiple substrate availability, and the added geographical reach for sales and deliveries, ‘Seydaco Packaging and its sister firms offer the flexibility to do it all’.

‘The past two years have been exciting for our company,’ said Seychell. ‘In 2014 my vision was to finalize all the options of the KBA-Flexotecnica CI web press line and to establish a presence in the US. By January 2015 I had finalized the purchase of the entire web line, and in early April 2015, I was also successful in buying National Carton & Coating near Dayton Ohio. It is a great location with excellent warehouse capacity.

‘I’m sure that 2016 will be equally exciting as we ramp up the new KBA-Flexotecnica into full production mode.’
