Weigang makes flexo sale but pushes offset

Chinese press manufacturer Weigang displayed the only offset press at Labelexpo India – but has made a sale with its traditional stack flexo machine.

‘People here are afraid of new things like offset and stay with what they know, like flexo,’ said Spring Xu, international sales manager at Weifang. ‘And this is not a cheap machine.’

Continues Xu: ‘We can also have problems with the image of Chinese companies here in India. The final buyer asks what machine you have, and if they say Weigang and not a Western press, it can be an issue.’

Despite these obstacles, Weigang has sold three presses to market-leading Indian converters like Ajanta Packaging. Xu says these companies appreciate the advantages of intermittent offset, particularly for short run high quality work where the plate costs are one quarter the cost of flexo plates.

The ZX320 press on the stand at Labelexpo India was a 6-color machine with flexo coating and die cutting. The print area is 300 x 350mm, maximum repeat length 350mm and operating speeds up to 63m/min. Weigang’s India agent is Global Graphics.

Also on the stand was a ZBS-320G stack flexo press sold to Star Offset. The machine is configured with 7-colors, cold foil, three die cutting stations and a sheeter. A DK-320 slitting module with semi-automatic turret rewinder completed the display.
