Domino launches AI-enabled Sunrise DFE

New digital front-end processes jobs faster with machine learning technology.

Domino Printing Sciences has launched the latest version of Sunrise, its AI-enabled digital front-end and workflow for Domino N-Series digital label presses. Label converters will have the opportunity to see the Sunrise in operation at Labelexpo Europe 2025.

The updated Sunrise Digital Front End combines comprehensive pre-press and production tools with artificial intelligence and the Harlequin RIP, enabling converters to process jobs faster and more accurately. The system includes Label Studio for automated pre-press tasks, in-line variable data processing and Domino Viewer for press performance monitoring.

'Maximizing press uptime and productivity is a key priority for converters in today's competitive marketplace,' commented Michael Matthews, product manager for digital printing color at Domino. 'Domino is leading the way in using AI and machine learning to create intelligent RIP technology, delivering a highly efficient, scalable front-end.'

Label Studio streamlines job setup by automating repetitive pre-press tasks and eliminating the need for graphics editing software. The module offers real-time preview capabilities that reflect adjustments made, maximizing press uptime, reducing waste and enabling fine-tuning before ripping for optimal print results.

The system handles complex personalization jobs with ease and features real-time, in-line ripping onboard the N730i digital label press. Traditional variable data jobs required pre-processing while the press sat idle, as RIP speeds were too slow to keep pace with printing speeds.

'in-line RIP of variable data is a game changer for converters,' noted Matthews. 'Sunrise breaks down this barrier, processing variable data as-you-print.'

Using AI and machine learning, Sunrise's in-line label processing capabilities can instantly deconstruct PDF print jobs, fine-tune printing RIP settings, and accurately predict achievable printing speed. This empowers press operators to make data-driven decisions, optimize scheduling and significantly reduce downtime risk.

Domino Viewer monitors the status of one or multiple Domino presses in real-time, displaying errors, job information and cost estimates for the current job queue. The data can be accessed across a converter's local network or remotely via VPN connection. The system integrates with converter MIS and ERP systems.

'Having all this data at your fingertips makes it easy for production managers to identify potential cost savings and process improvements to increase overall equipment efficiency,' explained Matthews.

Sunrise becomes the new standard DFE for Domino label presses and will be available for existing users as a free upgrade.

'We are dedicated to being a strong partner for converters, listening to understand their business needs and continually improving our offering to help them meet their objectives,' concluded Russell Weller, head of digital products at Domino.

Label converters can see Sunrise in operation at Labelexpo Europe booth 3E91, where it will be featured on all Domino label presses on display, including the new N410, N610i and N730i models.
