Synthomer launches bio-based release coatings

Suncryl Bio range offers silicone-free, PFAS-free options for pressure-sensitive applications.

Synthomer has introduced Suncryl Bio, a range of bio-based, silicone-free release coatings for pressure-sensitive applications, combining renewable raw material content with performance properties designed to meet tightening sustainability requirements.

The range comprises three products: Suncryl HP 114 BIO with 50 percent bio-based polymer content, Suncryl HP 98 Bio with 28 percent bio-based polymer content and Suncryl EU 127 Bio with 26 percent bio-based polymer content. Bio-content is verified by 14C analysis, and all three products are free from PFAS and APEO.

The coatings cure at temperatures below 140 deg C and are applicable on both filmic and fiber-based substrates. Synthomer says the range demonstrates less 'tightening up' over time compared to silicone-based alternatives, while strong hydrophobicity — indicated by contact angles above 90 deg — makes the products suitable for water-sensitive applications.

The silicone-free formulation also supports end-of-life recyclability. Repulpability of paper substrates coated with Suncryl Bio has been tested according to standard paper mill recycling processes, which Synthomer says supports the transition toward a more circular economy for fiber-based materials.

The products are inter-compatible through blending, allowing formulators to tailor release properties for specific industrial and consumer market requirements.
