Avery Dennison gains access to Intermec RFID patents
In a move that helps assure businesses that their RFID product identification labels, equipment and software meet industry guidelines for sourcing procedures and technology standards, Avery Dennison Corporation has joined Intermec Corporation’s Rapid Start intellectual property program. The agreement provides Avery Dennison’s Retail Information Services Division (RIS) with access to certain portfolios of Intermec’s current and future patented RFID technology, including RFID-enabled tags and printers.
Avery Dennison Rrtail Information Services expects the agreement to be of particular value to apparel, footwear, consumer and industrial goods businesses that place high priority on supply chain reliability and operational efficiency.
“The agreement reinforces Avery Dennison RIS’ position as a preferred source for RFID-enabled tags, high-speed RFID tag and label printers and print/apply systems, and RFID consulting services,” says Mischa Reis, director of marketing, RFID & Security Products.
Reis notes that during the past decade, RFID-related research and development work has been completed by several companies, resulting in a large number of RFID patents. Because Intermec’s portfolio of RFID patents is large, the agreement is seen by Avery Dennison RIS as a major step in helping its customers avoid time consuming activities associated with intellectual property rights.
“The agreement simplifies the process for Avery Dennison RIS’ customers to proceed with adopting RFID technology,” Reis notes. “It addresses concerns over patents that a portion of our customers have had, and will allow us all to proceed with greatly reduced risk.”
