BPIF Labels highlights digital label printing market

The recent technical seminar on the state of the digital label printing market looked at the fast moving segment of the self-adhesive label printing sector.

Highlights included an address on the state of the market by Mike Fairley.  With growth rapidly increasing 15 percent year on year, he estimated that 40 percent of all label printing will be produced digitally by 2020.  This is confirmed by the fact that one third of all new presses sold at the recent Labelexpo Europe were for digital formats.  The digital processes are offering a more re-active response to changes in design, the growth of shorter run lengths and the ability to produce a full range of variants for the brand owners at reduced cost.

Other speakers discussed design and color management processes, finishing systems, substrates and the various digital processes available; dry and liquid toner as well as inkjet. With web to print software being a very useful medium for digital label printing, Andrew McKerlie and Katy Nightingale of Labeltraxx demonstrated how efficient a good web to print system can be in the efficient production of digitally produced labels.

Two digital printers gave open presentations about their companies’ experiences and the advantages and disadvantages of going digital.

The seminar concluded with a panel session with all the speakers, covering a range of questions and topics.

A more detailed round up from the seminar will be published in L&L issue 6, 2011.
