Lake Image and Domino collaborate for numbering on heat-shrunk substrate

Lake Image Systems and Domino have collaborated to offer technology for printing competition numbers on heat-shrunk seals, such as soft drink bottles, cans or other containers. In these applications there is a requirement for high levels of integrity and full traceability to meet standards compliance.
The development combines inkjet printing from Domino with Lake Image’s inspection systems.
The technology is currently in place for competition numbering with a large shrink sleeve and packaging company for a consumer competition contract where security, integrity and traceability are key requirements, running at line speeds of more than 200 meters per minute producing in excess of 1,400 products per minute.
Martin Keats, UK managing director of Lake Image, said: ‘We are delighted to have cracked this technical challenge with Domino’s help and plenty of testing with the end user. We anticipate the solution being of real benefit to a wide range of retailers, manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies.’
Heat-shrunk substrates are transparent, yet light-reflective, which poses reading challenges for cameras. As a result Lake Image’s systems include specialist lighting designed to remove specularized reflections, and therefore improve reading performance.
