European flexible packaging market shows strong growth
European converted flexible packaging sales grew 4.7 per cent in 2010, with Eastern Europe and Russia performing the best, according to the latest report from PCI Films Consulting.
Its report, ‘The European Flexible Packaging Market 2011’ states that while all markets showed growth, much of the increase relates to raw material and energy cost increases. It highlights Eastern Europe, with an average 6.2 per cent sales increase, with Russia at nearly 10 per cent.
Part of the increase is attributed to the growing popularity of stand-up pouches, whose strength, lightness and ease of transport offer an environmentally friendly alternative to rigid packaging.
The 2011 report provides market analysis and statistics for 2010 and forecasts through to 2015. One of its revelations is the growing dominance of Amcor, following its acquisition of Alcan’s European flexible packaging operations. With a 25 per cent market share, the Australian company is driving the consolidation of the industry, with other companies being forced into acquisitions in order to compete.
Study author Paul Gaster said: ‘Europe’s flexible packaging market continues to grow in spite of the serious economic and financial upheavals currently affecting European economies. The reason is simple - demand is constant because of the principal end-use markets – food, pharmaceuticals and pet food.’
